New Brighton Woman Accused of Leaving Kids Alone in Van

A New Brighton woman is accused of leaving her kids alone in a broken-down van. Valerie Fullum was arraigned yesterday on child endangerment charges. Rochester police say Fullum left a baby and nine-year-old child alone on Route 68 last month while she walked to a gas station. Philadelphia Man Cleared of Murder After 27 Years in Prison

Willie Veasy’s long-running appeal came to an end Wednesday morning, when a judge tossed out the murder conviction. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the judge told the 54-year-old Veasy “You’re a free man,” as a crowd in courtroom erupted in applause. He’d spent 27 years in prison.

Kenyan Man’s Search for his Father Runs into Church Cover-up

SAMBURU, Kenya (AP) — An Italian missionary priest allegedly impregnated a Kenyan girl when she was just 16. But the priest _ who to this day denies paternity _ was transferred by his superiors, and a Kenyan man was found for the girl to marry. The Catholic Church’s efforts to conceal what is alleged to have happened in Kenya would stretch over three decades and stymie a Kenyan man’s efforts to find out why he was so much lighter-skinned than his siblings.

Fight Brewing Between Trump and Dems Over Constitution, Impeachment Battle

WASHINGTON (AP) — A fight is brewing between President Donald Trump and Democrats over what the Constitution means when it says “the sole power of impeachment” lies with the House of Representatives. The White House counsel is vowing to end all cooperation with House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry into the Republican president and on Tuesday called the inquiry “illegitimate.” Courts have hesitated to tell the House how to run the impeachment process.

Cases of STDs Rise to a Record High in the U.S., the CDC Says

The cases of sexually transmitted diseases has risen to a record high in the United States. According to figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevent, the number of combined cases of syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia in the United States rose to a record high last year. More than 2.4 million syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia infections were reported in the United States in 2018. That’s an increase of more than 100,000 cases from the previous year. It attributed the increase to several factors, including a decline in condom use among young people and men who have sex with men; increased screening among some groups; and cuts to sexual health programs at the state and local level.

Progress Made On Watts Mills & Brush Creek Addressed At Work Session

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

Though relatively brief, the County Commissioners did receive a pair of important updates at their weekly work session on Wednesday, October 9.

First was an update from DPW director Dan Colville about the future of the main road that is used in access to Brush Creek Park:

At some point, the lack or lacking level of understanding when it came to the issues surrounding the state of Brush Creek pinned the frustrations of North Sewickley and Marion Township residents with that of the Commissioners. But if this meeting was any indication, those feelings might have dissipated. One Marion resident was quick to give praise to both Colville and the Commissioners:

Also at the work session, an update several months in the making was finally announced. Julie Bowers talked about how the group Workin’ Bridges, in coordination with PennDot, has made improvements in the Watts Mills Bridge area in South Beaver Township:

Commissioner Tony Amadio and Solicitor Garen Fedeles were absent from the October 9 work session.
