For some, it was like yesterday. For others, they never lived through it. But on March 23, generations of all ages are invited to learn about the days when the steel mill was king.

The Beaver Falls CDC is presenting a speaking series entitled “Stories Of The Steel Mills”, a three-part series that showcases multiple perspectives about life and work in the mills that once adorned Beaver County’s roads and rivers. Wendy Whelpley, the Executive Director of the BFCDC, joined Matt Drzik to discuss this series on the March 16 edition of A.M. Beaver County.

Whelpley spoke about the importance of telling these stories and preserving its honest history, as well as the possible effects it may have on those who are continuing to understand the spiritual landscape of places like Beaver Falls. The series will be held at the Carnegie Free Library in Beaver Falls on March 23, April 6, and April 20 (all Wednesdays) at 7 PM.

(Ellwood City, Lawrence County, Pa.) Pa State Police in New Castle are investigating a possible arson fire of a vehicle that occurred on West Lawrence Ave. in Ellwood City.
Troopers reported via release that they dispatched to 1510 Lawrence Ave on February 19, 2022 at 7:04 PM to investigate a vehicle fire involving a black Jeep. Troopers don’t know what year and model of Jeep it was. The incident is currently under investigation as no other information was released. Troopers are asking anyone that may have information regarding this incident to contact the Pennsylvania State Police at the New Castle Barracks at 724-598-2211

TOKYO (AP) — A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Fukushima in northern Japan, triggering a tsunami advisory and plunging more than 2 million homes in the Tokyo area into darkness. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there’s no longer a tsunami threat though the Japan Meteorological Agency kept its low risk advisory. The region is part of northern Japan that was devastated by a deadly 9.0 quake and tsunami 11 years ago that also caused nuclear plant meltdowns. The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant where the cooling systems failed after the 2011 disaster said workers found no abnormalities there. TV says there are reports of fire, damage to buildings and falling rocks in Fukushima. There has been no word on casualties.

FRANKLIN, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania district attorney says a man who fatally shot a guest at his cabin nine times did so out of self-defense when the guest was threatening others with an assault rifle while high on mushrooms. Venango County District Attorney D. Shawn White said this week that no charges would be filed in the killing of 29-year-old Peter Spencer and pushed back against criticism that the investigation lacked transparency. He said the evidence supports witness accounts that Spencer was threatening others when he was shot Dec. 12. Spencer’s family and their attorney had previously criticized White for not keeping them informed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Wednesday the U.S. is sending more anti-aircraft, anti-armor weapons and drones to Ukraine to assist in its defense against Russia. The president’s comments came as he formally announced his administration was sending an additional $800 million in military assistance to Ukraine. About $1 billion in military aid has been sent in just the last week. Biden spoke hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a video address to members of U.S. Congress in which he made an impassioned plea for the U.S. and West to provide more help to save his young democracy.

Over the last few weeks, ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) applications for small businesses and non-profit organizations in Beaver County have been available for download and completion. However, the response has been relatively smaller than in previous iterations of ARPA relief; as was discussed at the County Commissioners’ work session on Wednesday.

“I would say no more than fifteen [organizations] between both small businesses and non-profits,” Chief Clerk Nicole Long stated at the session. “We’ve hardly gotten any at all.” The realization of this came as no surprise to Commissioner Jack Manning: “I didn’t think there’d be as much as with the CARES Act.”

According to Long, the issue may be centered around taxes: “There is a little bit of an issue with the non-profits people,” she said, “because they can’t file their taxes until the [Form] 990 is deposited. But I told them that to still submit the application and, when they get their 990, we can collect that from them and review everything.”

The applications must be submitted by March 31 and can be found at the Beaver County website.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cited Pearl Harbor and the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 on Wednesday in appealing to the U.S. Congress to do more to help Ukraine’s fight against Russia. We need you right now,” Zelenskyy said in remarks livestreamed at the U.S. Capitol. He added, “I call on you to do more.” Lawmakers gave him a standing ovation before and after his speech. Zelenskyy showed a packed auditorium of U.S. lawmakers an emotional, graphic video of the destruction and devastation in his country has suffered in the war. President Joe Biden has resisted Zelenskyy’s requests to send warplanes to Ukraine, which would risk escalating the war with Russia.
