VIDEO: Dr. Calvin Troup Seeks National Prominence For Geneva College’s Faith-Based Education

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

Like his peer in Dr. Jen Cushman–who Matt Drzik spoke to earlier on A.M. Beaver County–Dr. Calvin Troup sees his institution making strides in its connection and developing relationship with Beaver County. The major difference however, lies in its backbone…and Dr. Troup is hoping that such a backbone gets national recognition.

Dr. Troup is the President of Geneva College, and he joined Matt Drzik on the February 21 edition of A.M. Beaver County as part of Beaver County Radio’s celebration of President’s Day 2022. He joined Geneva College as President in 2016, and since then the College Hill campus has continued its mission to offer its students a excelling level of higher education that is faith-based and focuses students on their calling from God in all fields from ministry to engineering. Geneva has also continued to maintain its strengthening relationship with the city of Beaver Falls and Beaver County, through its connection in the “Bridges & Pathways” alliance and partnerships with places like the Beaver County YMCA.

Still, as Troup mentioned in his President’s Day appearance, the college has bigger targets in sight as described by a “Vision Plan” created by the trustees last July. “The heart of this vision is two parts,” Troup said. “The first part is that Geneva would become known nationally for advancing the integration of faith and learning, and that’s something that is really our trademark at Geneva…the second part of our mission is preparing students for courageous engagement throughout their life’s work, in a culture and society that’s going through the kind of chaos and confusion that we see all around us.”

Dr. Jen Cushman Maintains The Reins At Penn State Beaver

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

“Right now we want to attract people to the county, so that we can really maximize this growth that we’re anticipating.”

Those words, from Penn State Beaver Chancellor Dr. Jen Cushman, summarizes the attitude that she and her colleagues are taking towards solidifying a strong future for Beaver County. She joined Matt Drzik on the February 21 edition of A.M. Beaver County as part of Beaver County Radio’s celebration of President’s Day with local leaders.

Cushman joined Penn State Beaver as Chancellor in 2016, and since then she’s put an emphasis on the growth of education at the Monaca campus, with a focus towards inspiring those who come to Beaver County for an education to build their future career and successes in the area as well. PSB has been a part of the “Bridges & Pathways” coalition with CCBC, Geneva College, and Robert Morris since 2017, and it has allowed for local students in higher education to have more avenues to access their next path and next steps in building their own future.

John Perrotto Breaks Down Current MLB Lockout

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio, photo by Matt Drzik)

Usually around this time of year, with the Super Bowl over and winter winding down, many sports fans welcome the arrival of pitchers and catchers to their respective squads in Florida or Arizona.

Instead they are being welcomed with labor standoffs and budget negotiations, and the 2022 Major League Baseball season is in jeopardy of starting later than usual…if it starts at all.

Freelance sportswriter John Perrotto joined Matt Drzik to talk about the current lockout situation on the February 15 edition of A.M. Beaver County, and Perrotto feels that the pride involved with both the players and the owners in this situation could keep baseball from happening for some time.

“I don’t see baseball losing a full season like hockey did a few years back,” Perrotto said, “but I could see this stretching to where the season doesn’t start until Memorial Day weekend. I hope I’m wrong.”

Perrotto did have some hope in the regard that the framework of this year’s negotiations have the sides considerably closer to a deal than during the 1994 lockout; an event that cancelled the 1994 World Series and delayed the start of the 1995 season. He also spoke about how a lockout could effect a team like the Pirates.

“I think the Pirates should be okay…I don’t see them going bankrupt or anything like that,” Perrotto added. “Quite frankly, they weren’t expected to have a very big attendance this year, so they won’t be looking at losing out on as much ticket revenue as some of the better-drawing teams in the major leagues.”

VIDEO: Dr. Chester Thompson Is The First CEO Of Midland Innovation & Technology Charter School

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

“What people don’t realize is that you always have to up your game. You always have to turn that notch one degree. And the only way you’re going to succeed in life is to be comfortable with the uncomfortable.”

Dr. Chester “Chet” Thompson has become the first CEO of the new Midland Innovation & Technology Charter School, and that piece of wisdom was just one of many he shared when sitting down with Matt Drzik on the February 14 edition of A.M. Beaver County. Thompson was announced as CEO at the start of February, and the school is set to open in September.

Thompson, as CEO of MITCS, stated that his major role will be centered around building an atmosphere where students learning a vast variety of skills can feel positive energy to work together and learn with confidence: “We want students to feel that this is not only a safe space, but more importantly an environment where they can thrive and succeed.”

Eric Fontana Releases Newest Book: “Restaurant Gems Of Pittsburgh: Master Edition”

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

To all those who’ve ever dreaded hearing the words “Where do you want to eat tonight?”, knowing that it’ll cause the brain to fritz…a guide has come to your aid. Well, at least if you live in Western Pennsylvania.

Local author & restaurant critic Eric Fontana has released his latest book, “Restaurant Gems Of Pittsburgh: Master Edition“, a in-depth look into over 100 local establishments in seven different counties across Western PA (including Beaver). He sat down with Matt Drzik on the February 11 edition of A.M. Beaver County to talk about the new book, which comes two years after his first release.

“Most of these restaurants are going to be your mom-and-pop, private owned [establishments],” Fontana said, “and to the best of my knowledge, there’s no other book like this.” Fontana grades each establishment on its food quality, portion size, and atmospheric ambience, along with an in-depth look into each establishment’s origins and journeys to success.

Fontana, whose website and Facebook page also provide regular restaurant critiques and analysis, says he’s happy with where this journey has taken him. “I will get you more business, I know how to promote, I know what people are looking for,” he said, “and it’s fun. I’m using my gift.”

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

“We weren’t able to get into schools and interact with communities the same way we had been doing for many years…and at a time where social media is just utilized more than ever, it really seemed like a fitting way to interact with a large variety of people.”

Those are the words of Yasmeen Manyisha, the Safety Press Officer for PennDOT District 11, who spoke with Matt Drzik on the February 11 edition of A.M. Beaver County about PennDOT’s “Safety Citizens” program, which allows members of the Commonwealth to submit images, messages or videos regarding a certain safety topic; selected choices will be displayed on PennDOT’s social media platforms.

Manyisha talked about the necessity for “Safety Citizens” being borne from the aftermath of the 2020 pandemic, and how virtual connection has created a new avenue for residents statewide to keep up with safety information. “That’s the great thing about this platform,” she stated. “You’re not keeping that information to yourself…you’re sharing it with everyone else.”
