HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Democrat Josh Shapiro will become the 48th governor of Pennsylvania at the inaugural ceremony at the state Capitol. The 49-year-old Shapiro will come into office Tuesday with more experience in state government than any recent predecessors, including eight years as a state lawmaker and six as the state’s elected attorney general. Shapiro won’t spell out specific policy aims, aides say, but he’ll emphasize themes he has developed previously, including that voters want progress on important quality-of-life issues. Shapiro is succeeding outgoing Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, who was term-limited, and will be the first governor of Pennsylvania since 1966 to be elected to succeed a member of his own party.

Biden: Americans should ‘pay attention’ to MLK’s legacy

ATLANTA (AP) — President Joe Biden has made a historical pilgrimage to what he calls “America’s freedom church” to mark Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Biden says democracy is at perilous moment and that the civil rights leader’s life and legacy “show us the way and we should pay attention.” Biden was the first sitting president to deliver a Sunday morning sermon at King’s Ebenezer Baptist Church. The president cited the telling question that King himself once asked of the nation — namely, “Where do we go from here?” Biden said his message on King’s birthday is “we choose democracy over autocracy.”

The Buffalo Bills blew a 17-point advantage before recovering to win. That narrow escape came less than 24 hours after the Jacksonville Jaguars overcame a 27-point deficit and pulled off one of the most stunning comeback victories in playoff history on Saturday. No lead is safe and the drama abounds so far in the NFL playoffs. A loaded Sunday schedule saw the Bills hang on for a 34-31 win over the Miami Dolphins, the New York Giants upset the Minnesota Vikings 31-24 and the Cincinnati Bengals hang on to beat the Baltimore Ravens 24-17. One more game in the round remains: Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.

House GOP demands visitor logs in Biden classified docs case

WASHINGTON (AP) — Newly empowered House Republicans are demanding the White House turn over all information related to its searches that have uncovered classified documents at President Joe Biden’s home and former office. That request comes in the wake of a new disclosure by the White House over the weekend of more records found at the president’s Delaware residence. In a letter Sunday to the White House, the chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee says he wants to see the documents and communications related to the searches. Also sought are visitor logs of the president’s home in Wilmington, Delaware.
