Kellogg says it’s removing artificial dyes from cereals by the end of this year

WK Kellogg said Thursday that it will remove artificial colors from all its cereals by the end of this year.

The change comes a year ahead of schedule. Kellogg said last August that it would remove synthetic dyes from its cereals by the end of 2027.

But the company said Thursday it has identified fruit- and vegetable-based juices that will give cereals like Froot Loops and Apple Jacks their distinctive colors. The Battle Creek, Michigan-based company said it has also invested in equipment that will allow it to transition to natural colors.

The company said it is also removing BHT, an artificial preservative, from the small number of cereals that still contain it.

“More and more consumers are looking for foods made with simple, recognizable ingredients and we are proud to meet those expectations even sooner than planned,” Kellogg’s Chief Growth Officer Doug VanDeVelde said in a statement.

Kellogg has faced pressure for years to remove artificial ingredients from its cereals, which it has already done in other countries like Canada. In 2024, dozens of people rallied outside Kellogg’s headquarters and delivered petitions with 400,000 signatures asking the company to remove artificial dyes and BHT.

That pressure has grown under President Donald Trump’s health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has urged food companies to phase out petroleum-based artificial dyes. Last August, Kellogg also signed an agreement with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton saying it would “permanently remove toxic dyes” from its cereals by the end of 2027.

Retailers are also forcing companies to act. Earlier this year, Target said it would stop selling cereals that contain artificial colors by the end of May. Walmart has also said it will remove artificial colors from its store brands by January 2027.

Two drivers of Mercedes AMG cars file class action lawsuit over an alleged burn hazard in its logo

NEW YORK (AP) — Two drivers of Mercedes AMG cars have filed a class action lawsuit against the luxury car company, claiming that the AMG logo on their driver’s seat gets so hot that it literally brands them and causes burns.

Gabriel Lahijani and Karendeep “Karina” Bath allege the front seats of certain Mercedes AMG vehicles have a design defect where the raised metallic AMG logo is “reasonably expected to contact an occupant’s upper back, neck, or shoulder,” according to the court document filed earlier this week in the U.S. District Court of California’s Western division.

The plaintiffs want Mercedes to compensate them for any medical expenses, as well as any pain, suffering and emotional distress they can prove at trial. They also want Mercedes to pay for other owners to have the logo removed from their cars.

Mercedes-Benz couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.

Lahigani, a Los Angeles resident, had leased a new 2026 Mercedes-AMG E-Class vehicle from an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership in Los Angeles, according to the suit. He reported receiving second-degree burns on his back on May 31, after entering his vehicle wearing a tank top. A board-certified dermatologist subsequently documented first- and second-degree burns, describing the injury as “AMG inscribed.”

Roughly six weeks later, Bath, a Chatsworth, California resident, received similar burns allegedly from the logo design while wearing a sleeveless top. After parking her Mercedes-AMG vehicle in Los Angeles, Bath returned to the vehicle and entered the driver’s seat, the suit said. Her shoulder immediately touched the logo, causing a burning sensation. In the following days, a mark in the shape of the AMG logo “darkened and became visible on her skin, consistent with a thermal contact burn,” the lawsuit said.

In December, Mercedes-Benz USA and parent company Daimer AG agreed to pay $149.6 million to settle allegations that the automaker secretly installed devices in hundreds of thousands of vehicles to pass emission tests, according to an announcement by a coalition of attorneys general.

According to the coalition, between 2008 and 2016 the German automaker equipped more than 211,000 diesel passenger cars and vans with software devices that optimized emission controls during tests but reduced the controls during normal operations.

Nancy C. McLaughlin Jan 30, 1947 — Aug 8, 2026

Nancy Carol McLaughlin (Bevan), 79, of New Brighton, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 08, 2026, in her home surrounded by her family. She was born on January 30, 1947, Rochester, PA, to the late Thomas Charles Bevan and Dorothy Matilda Bevan.

Nancy was a 1964 graduate of Rochester High School. She met the love of her life and soul mate, Raymond “Ray” Hugh McLaughlin, at the New Brighton swimming pool off Junction Stretch, where Ray worked as a lifeguard. The two were married in 1967 and soon after began building their family together.

Nancy worked in the office at Pittsburgh Bridge and Iron Works in Rochester, before stepping away from the workforce to raise her children. In 1980, her world was turned upside down when Ray passed away unexpectedly. To support her family, Nancy returned to work as a bank teller at Peoples Home Savings Bank in Chippewa. Soon thereafter she met her lifelong partner, Carl Terwilliger, and the two were together until his passing in 2008. Her mother-in-law, Beverly Jane McLaughlin, lived with the family from 1980 until her passing in 1992.

Just shy of her 50th birthday, Nancy received the sudden news that she had rectal cancer, with a very slim chance of surviving. True to her fighting spirit, she beat cancer, though she didn’t come through unscathed, and the toll it took left her unable to return to work, ultimately going on disability and forcing her into early retirement.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond Hugh McLaughlin of New Brighton, PA; and her sister, Sandra Lynn Knopp (Bevan) of Rochester, PA.

She is survived by her daughter and devoted caregiver, Nancy Rae Drodge (Doug Drodge) of New Brighton, PA, and her son, Thomas Raymond McLaughlin (Amy-Grace McLaughlin) of Ohioville, PA.

Nancy was the proud grandmother of Jonathan McCullough (Boardman, OH); Cassandra Marie Marencel (Jon Marencel) of New Brighton, PA; Donnie Ray Drodge of Youngstown, OH; Ramie Lynn McLaughlin of New Brighton, PA; Raegen Alyse McLaughlin (Jordan Moore) of Monaca, PA; and Rayna-Grace McLaughlin of Ohioville, PA.

She was also the proud great-grandmother of Eimara Shay Howard, Lucas McKenzie, Daxx Devonte Howard, TaLiyah Mae Collier, and Josephine Michelle Marencel, all of New Brighton, PA; and Owen Robert Moore of Monaca, PA.

Those that had the privilege of meeting Nancy soon came to know of her loving, caring and giving nature. She knew everyone and everyone loved her. The kids in the neighborhood would call her “Momma Nance.” Over the years she took in cousins and other relatives when they needed a place to stay. She truly had a loving and genuine care to help others. The nickname that stuck for friends and family to differentiate between her and her daughter, Nancy Rae (“Little Nance”), was “Big Nance.”

Nancy will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a fighter who gave more than she ever took. She had an unselfish, giving heart, always ready to help anyone in need, and a warmth and sense of fun that made everyone around her feel like family. Her love for her family carried her through the hardest of times; her strength and spirit will not be forgotten.

Friends and family will be received Tuesday, August 11, 2026 from 4 to 7 p.m. Additional viewing will be held Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Jack Brooks, officiating.

Private interment will follow in Grove Cemetery, New Brighton.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bubba Chandler allowed three hits in six innings, Jake Mangum had three hits and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Mets 9-0 on Saturday night to end a four-game skid.

Chandler (5-8) struck out five and walked one on 85 pitches — 58 for strikes. The 23-year-old former top prospect has surrendered seven earned runs in 26 2/3 innings over his past five starts.

Mangum had two doubles, a single and a stolen base. Nick Gonzales drove in three runs for the Pirates, who hadn’t scored more than four in seven straight games since an 8-7 loss at the Reds on July 31.

Robert Stock (0-2) lasted three innings for the Mets, being charged for eight runs on nine hits and five walks with four strikeouts.

Mangum led off the first with a double off the right-field wall and scored from third when Gonzales grounded back to Stock with the bases loaded. Ronny Simon then slipped a two-out double just inside third base and down the line, tacking on two more.

In the third, Simon reached on a well-placed bunt, stole second and scored on a bloop single to right from Jacob Gonzalez.

Pittsburgh added four runs before recording an out in the fourth. Mangum lined an RBI double to left and scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Stock walked Spencer Horwitz to reload the bases and was pulled after Gonzales lined a two-run double into the right-field corner.

Mets catcher Luis Torrens pitched the final two innings and was welcomed by Brandon Lowe sending a 42-mph pitch 380 feet to right for his 25th homer.

Up next

Pirates RHP Jared Jones (2-3, 4.02 ERA) was set to start the series finale Sunday against Mets LHP Sean Manaea (3-5, 4.33).
