SEWICKLEY, Pa.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan 19, 2026– Esmark Sports Management and Entertainment, a wholly owned subsidiary of Esmark Inc., announced today it is the team sponsor and co-owner of a newly established professional hockey team in Košice, Slovakia. This partnership underscores Esmark’s commitment to supporting sports development and strengthening community connections through the unifying power of athletics.

Esmark Sports Management and Entertainment, a wholly owned subsidiary of Esmark Inc., is the team sponsor and co-owner of a newly established professional hockey team in Košice, Slovakia.

The Hockey Club Esmark Košice team began competing in the 2HL division of professional ice hockey in Slovakia in the 2025-2026 season. The roster features players from Košice who have been competing for clubs across Slovakia.

“The creation of this team is more than just hockey. It’s about pride, opportunity and giving the people of Košice a team of their own to cheer for,” said Richard E. Bouchard, President of Esmark Sports Management and Entertainment. “We’re proud to help bring talented athletes back home to represent their city, and to create a foundation that will inspire the next generation of players.”

Jergus Spodniak, the team’s founder, co-owner and goaltender envisioned building a team that unites local talent living in Košice but previously lacked the opportunity to represent their hometown on the professional stage. According to Spodniak, Esmark’s sponsorship ensures the financial stability and professional resources needed for the team to establish itself in Slovakia’s hockey landscape. Beyond the immediate financial support, the partnership reflects a long-term vision of building both a competitive team and a lasting community institution.

“The HK Esmark Košice team will not only provide athletes with the chance to wear their hometown colors but also give fans a team that authentically represents the pride and spirit of their community,” said Spodniak.

By joining the Hockey Club Esmark Košice team, Esmark is building on its established track record in sports development. Esmark became a majority owner of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) Johnstown Tomahawks in 2012 and played a key role in guiding the team’s growth and success. Under Bouchard and Esmark’s leadership, the Tomahawks not only thrived on the ice, but also became a cornerstone of community engagement and youth hockey development.

“Jim [James Bouchard] and Esmark demonstrated an exceptional ability to build a program that was competitive, sustainable and community-focused,” said Mark Frankenfeld, Commissioner of NAHL. “Their work with the Johnstown Tomahawks had a lasting impact on the league, community and growth of the sport, and I’m excited to see that same passion and commitment brought to The Hockey Club Esmark Košice.”

“Esmark and the Bouchard family have a proven track record of investing in sports and enhancing communities. From their work with FC Pittsburgh, to the Esmark Stars and more, they not only invest financially, but also with heart and commitment. It’s really something special to watch and be a part of,” said Mario Lemieux, National Hockey League (NHL) Hall of Fame, former owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and arguably one of the greatest hockey players of all time.

Since its founding in 2003, Esmark Inc. has a longstanding history of dedication to athletic advancement. Jim Bouchard formerly co-owned the Johnstown Tomahawks, and the company now representing over 2,000 student athletes, including those affiliated with Esmark Stars, Esmark All-Americans, Quaker Valley Hockey, FC Pittsburgh and Esmark Youth Development.

(Beaver County, PA) The BVIU Board of Directors is expected to vote on January 28th, 2026 at their regular meeting on borrowing up to $15 million to ensure New Horizon School reopens in time for the 2026–27 school year. However, before the measure can move forward, each of the fourteen school district boards in Beaver County must first approve the proposal. This followed a special session on January 6th, 2026 that took almost four hours and it focused on finalizing details related to the financing, scope and timeline of the project and included both superintendents from the school districts that jointly own New Horizon and BVIU board members. Beaver County Commissioner Chairman Dan Camp informed the board members of the BVIU during that session that $1 million will be contributed from Beaver County toward the remediation effort. Commissioner Chairman Camp has also attended public meetings on the project over the past year and BVIU expresses their gratitude to him and leadership in Beaver County for their support of the rehabilitation project for New Horizon School and their support for the school itself. The school that assists children with special needs in Beaver County is now operating at a cost of $50,000 per month and is operating temporarily from the Charles J. Betters Innovation Center in Midland.

“Saved by the Scan” Campaign Encourages Early Detection for those at Risk of Lung Cancer

(Washington, D.C.) According to the American Lung Association’s 2025 “State of Lung Cancer” report, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, yet fewer than 1 in 5 (18%) of people at high risk have been screened. The Ad Council and the American Lung Association have partnered for the Saved By The Scan campaign to encourage those that are eligible to get screened for lung cancer since 2021, because early detection can save lives. People who are eligible for a scan include people that smoke, or people who have quit in the last 15 years, or people with a history of 20 or more “pack years” of smoking (for example, one pack a day for 20 years, or two packs a day for 10 years) and people that are 50-80 years old. You can visit SavedByTheScan.org by clicking here to learn more and/or check if you qualify for a low-dose CT scan. Also, over 1.5 million people have taken the eligibility quiz, with 1 in 5 learning that they are at high risk.

Hopewell grad part of Indiana U. coaching staff

Staff Reports

The Indiana University football team looks to close out an invincible season tonight, making it a special night for a Beaver County native who has been a part of the squad’s success.

Matt Wilson, a Hopewell High School graduate, serves as assistant athletic director for player personnel for the Indiana football team.

Wilson, a Class of 1997 Hopewell alum, was among the first personnel hires made by Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti in January 2024.

“Anyone who knows Matt Wilson knows what has happened in Bloomington (Indiana) the last two seasons is no fluke,” Will Redmond, general manager of recruiting for the Auburn University football team, told FootballScoop,  a source devoted to football coaching news. “Matt has the distinct ability to take a head coach’s vision for a roster, both culturally and athletically, and bring that vision to life. He has done this at every stop along his journey.

Wilson had worked for Tennessee, his alma mater, as well as Mississippi State, Arkansas State and North Carolina State, before he was hired by Cignetti.

Upon taking command of the Indiana program, Cignetti, a Pittsburgh native, made many changes overhauling Indiana’s recruiting department.

“Chiefly among them, Cignetti brought in Matt Wilson as IU’s assistant athletic director for player personnel,” according to the Indianapolis Star newspaper. “Wilson, who also worked for Indiana as senior director of player personnel/recruiting in 2017, had success in helping organize and execute recruiting efforts across multiple stops in his career.”

In a February 2024 interview, Cignetti said, “I was looking for good structure, capable people (and was) “Impressed with Matt. Have known him a long time.”

Wilson, earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Arizona State in 2010.

Wilson’s previous stop at IU happened in 2017, when he helped the Hoosiers sign the third-highest-rated class in that school’s history as the senior director of player personnel/recruiting.

He worked two years at Arkansas State (2021-22) where he served as the assistant athletics director for player personnel.  personnel/recruiting.
