Elementary Gifted Education Class At Aliquippa Elementary School Headed To Philly

The elementary gifted education class  at Aliquippa Elementary School will head to Philadelphia next Thursday.  Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano reports that the class raised money selling doughnuts and sugar cookies and private donations also supported the students  and teacher Debbie Frank’s efforts.  Ms. Beth Walkney, district psychologist and special education coordinator made the announcement at last night’s board meeting. Mrs. Frank thanked all the supporters of the  project when contacted this morning.

Dr. Ben Carson Speaking at Grove City College Commencement

Republican presidential candidate and neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson will address the newest graduates of Grove City College during Saturday’s commencement, according to a news release from the college. Carson is filling in for conservative author William Bennett, who was scheduled to speak but had to decline unexpectedly. The college also will present an honorary Doctor of Science degree to Dr. Carson during the ceremony, in recognition of his contributions in advancing medical science. Commencement is slated for 10 a.m. Saturday on the Quad on the campus of Grove City College.

Penguins Prepare For Tampa

The Penguins will practice in Cranberry Township today.  They will prepare for game one of the Eastern Conference Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning  Friday night at the Console Energy Center.  Some interesting pre-series  stats.  The Penguins goals scored  so far in the playoffs  everages 3.36 per game.  The Lightning have averaged 3 goals per game.  The Penguins have averaged 2.27 goals against, while Tampa Bay ‘s goals against average is 2.41.  The Penguins were 0-2-1 for the season against Tampa. The teams last faced each other in February.  The pre-game show  begins Friday night at  7-pm on WBVP and WMBA.

Pirates Win Move On To Chicago

After beating the Reds, the Pirates  have the day off today  before opening a weekend series against the Cubs.  The first place  cubs lost a day-night double header 7-4 and  1-0 to the San Diego Padres yesterday.  Friday’s starting pitchers are Francisco Lirianno for the Pirates.   Jason Hammel will be on the mound for Chicago.

Teleforum live at Senior Day 05/11/16

Mike Romigh host of Beaver County Radio’s Teleforum broadcast his show live at Senior Day at the Beaver Valley Mall on Wednesday 5/11/2016. The Broadcast was done in collaboration with The Beaver County Office on Aging.  Mike interviewed a variety of different guests as Frank Sparks, co-host of The Saturday Sports Slam and the Lead Lap  manned the Beaver County Radio Prize wheel. Beaver County Courthouse Evacuated

Beaver County employees are back inside the courthouse this afternoon after an evacuation was ordered earlier this morning due to an activated fire alarm. Commissioners Chief of Staff Joe Weidner tells Beaver County Radio newsman Pat Septak that a light fixture began smoking at around 10:45 a.m., and that’s why the courthouse was evacuated. But he says it was not a big deal and that firefighters gave the all-clear about 30 minutes later and all employees were allowed back inside the building.

State Rep. Jim Christiana Reacts To County’s Firing Of Egley Secretary

State Representative Jim Christiana is reacting to the latest developments in the “pay-to-play” scandal at the Beaver County Courthouse. Christiana says County Commissioner Chairwoman Sandie Egley did the right thing when she fired her administrative assistant, Randi Bick, who was at the center of the scandal brought to light by Christiana last week. Christiana met with Egley on Friday to inform her that, according to his sources, Bick told several individuals that if they didn’t contribute more to Egley’s campaign, they wouldn’t be doing business with the county, hoping that she would look into the matter and act accordingly. Then came word yesterday that Bick was no longer an employee. In an interview today with Mike Romigh on Beaver County Radio, Christiana said this is not over yet and is still calling for an investigation.

Ambridge Council Honors Police Officers

Ambridge Borough Council met last night  and recognized its police department in observance of National Police Week, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano. National Police Officers Memorial Day  is May 15. The borough has 11 full time and 10 part time officers and a K-9. The police department responds to  over 1,200 calls per month and  is under the direction of Mayor Richard D’Ambrosio and Chief James Mann.  Council president Mike Mikulich   asked that          “everyone  please take a moment to thank  our officers when you see them out on patrol.”
