Aliquippa 60, Avonworth 54 (Final/OT)

Despite trailing for several minutes in regulation, the Aliquippa Quips force overtime and prevail in the extra session over the Avonworth Antelopes by a score of 60-54. The Quips remain one of two WPIAL boys teams with an undefeated record (New Castle being the other) and remains in first place in Section 5-AA at 8-0 (13-0 overall). Avonworth falls to 5-3 (9-6 overall) and remains in fourth place in 5-AA. Tom Hays has the recap for 1460 WMBA.

Tailgate Party at the Mall

(Monaca, Pa) Beaver County Radio held a Black and Gold Tailgate party at the Beaver County Center at the Mall. Local entertainers John Tucci, Charlie Godart, and Beaver County Radio’s own Pat Septak and Mark Peterson wowed the crowd of Black and Gold Fans. The food was provided by Texas Road House  and Herr’s  Snacks. New Board of Beaver County Commissioners Meet For Their First Business Meeting

The Beaver County Commissioners met this morning for the first time since Republicans Sandy Egley and Dan Camp were sworn in as the new Republican majority. Former commissioners chairman Tony Amadio is the lone Democrat. The Commissioners immediately faced a budget dillema today. Beaver County Radio’s Greg Benedetti reports that county Controller David Rossi says the county is facing a 17-million-dollar deficit in 2016. But Egley and Camp declined comment.

Rochester School Bus Accident Under Investigation

Police in Rochetser Borough are investigating a school bus accident. Police confirmed to Beaver County Radio News that a school bus crashed into a telephone pole on East Washington Street at around 7:00 this morning. Police have not confirmed reports that it was a stolen bus that was involved in the crash. There were no injuries reported.

Police Make Arrest In 2 Lawrence Co. Robberies

Police say a suspect wanted in connection with two robberies in Lawrence County has been taken into custody. The Shenango Township Police Department says 46-year-old John Graham Jr. was arrested overnight after the Shenango China Federal Credit Union in New Castle and the Last Minit Mart in Shenango Township were held up on Wednesday. According to New Castle Police, the Shenango China Federal Credit Union in the Town Mall was robbed just after 3 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect was believed to be driving a white cargo van with ladder racks.  Then, later last night, Shenango Township Police say the Last Mini Mart on New Butler Road was held up. Police say the suspect was armed with a knife and left in what appeared to be the same white cargo van as the New Castle robbery. Shenango Township Police say Graham is charged with robbery, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment and simple assault.

Black and Gold Pep Rally planned

(Beaver County, PA) Beaver County radio has announced that it will host a free Black and Gold live broadcast pep rally at The Center at the Mall, in the Beaver Valley Mall, from noon to  2 P.M. on Friday January 15, 2015,  in preparation for the big divisional playoff game on Sunday. The general public is invited to attend and wear their  black and gold for the event, which will feature free food courtesy of Texas Roadhouse and Herr’s Potato Chips. Charlie Godart, star of the new reality TV show, “Hoodbillies”, along with Pat Septak and the Beaver County Radio Singers will perform Black and Gold fight songs.  Attendees will also be able to register for prize giveaways.  Mike Romigh, Host of Teleforum on WBVP and WMBA, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.  The event is sponsored by Aliquippa Giant Eagle and The Point Restaurant and Lounge.

Man Killed By Train In McKees rocks Identified

A man killed Sunday when he was hit by a train in McKees Rocks has been identified. 44-year-old Richard Schmidt – whose address was unknown – was struck by a train at the CSX crossing at River Road shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office. He was pronounced dead at the scene less than 10 minutes later from multiple blunt impact injuries. The manner of death remains under investigation.

No End In Sight In State Budget Battle

There’s been no letup in the fighting over a state budget. The GOP-controlled House yesterday voted to stop Governor Tom Wolf’s use of a formula targeting extra school subsidies to districts hardest-hit by past spending cuts. Republican lawmakers say Wolf lacks authority for the move.
