It Rains Threes

They may have been on the losing end of their games, but two Beaver County High Schools players had outstanding games.  Blackhawk beat Beaver 72-61 however,  Beaver’s Dante Anzevino drained six threes.  New Brighton’s Ronald Debo  had five threes in a 89-69 loss to  Summit Academy.

 

Stabler Had Brain Injury

Researchers at Boston University say former Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler had the brain disease CTE. Stabler died of Colon Cancer at the age of 69 in July.  The New York Times reports that Stabler had high Stage 3 CTE.  CTE has been found in the brains of dozens of former football players

Roger Federe Sidlined

Tennis star Roger Federer has had knee surgery.  The 34-year-old listed the surgery on his web site.  The statement didn’t say which knee was involved in the procedure. It was a success and was done Friday.  That was the day after his lost to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open Semi Final.

Fuyrk Faces Surgery

Former U S Open Champion Jim Furyk will miss about three months on the tour. He will have surgery on a troublesome wrist.  The wrist has not healed. It has sidelined Fuyrk since mid September.

Aliquippa 64, Quaker Valley 44 (Final)

Despite trailing after the first quarter (20-18) Aliquippa remains undefeated (20-0) and wins Section 5-AA with a 64-44 victory over Quaker Valley on WMBA. Sheldon Jeter led the Quips with 23 points, while Amos Luptak scored 27 to lead the Quakers. Both men were selected as tonight’s CCBC Players of The Game. The Quakers drop to 10-3 in the section (17-3 overall), while the Quips win the section standing at 13-0 with one game to go. Bob Barrickman has this recap for Beaver County Radio.

New Castle 60, Beaver Falls 49 (Final)

New Castle wins Section 2-AAA and remains undefeated (20-0) overall with a – win over Beaver Falls on WBVP. The Red Hurricane took the lead for good with a 3-point shot that ended the 1st quarter at 11-10 New Castle. Tonight’s CCBC Players of The Game were Marcus Hooker for New Castle (18 points) and Josh Creach for Beaver Falls (16 points). The Tigers drop to 11-2 in Section 2-AAA (18-3 overall), while New Castle clinches their first section title since 2014, improving to 13-0 in the section with the finale on Friday. Punxsutawney Phil Sees His Shadow, Predicting An Early Spring

Spring is coming early: So sayeth the rodent – or at least that’s what his handlers told us just before 7:30 this morning. Yes, Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, failed to see his shadow, meaning he’s “predicted” an early spring. But, of course, members of the top hat-wearing Inner Circle decided the prediction ahead of time, as always. They announced the results at sunrise on Gobbler’s Knob — just outside the town for which Phil is named.

AG Kane Says She Didn’t Raise Any Campaign Cash Last Year

Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane is reporting she didn’t raise any campaign contributions from donors in 2015 and she used campaign cash to pay more than $300,000 to law firms and public relations agencies. The embattled Kane is fighting criminal charges, the suspension of her law license and the potential that the Senate could vote to remove her from office.
