Jury Finds Man Guilty In 2012 Murder Of Pregnant Woman in Ambridge

A man has been convicted of two counts of second-degree murder in his retrial in the 2012 slaying of a pregnant Ambridge woman and her unborn child. Thirty-one-year-old Marlin “Twin” Kelly was also convicted Monday in Beaver County of conspiracy in the October 2012 shooting deaths of 19-year-old Conekeia Lynn “Coco” Finney and her unborn daughter. Prosecutors allege that Finney and another man went to an Ambridge apartment to rob the boyfriend of Finney, who was about seven months pregnant. He was convicted and sentenced to life but was granted a new trial last year. Kelly’s attorney argued that his client hadn’t agreed to commit robbery, an essential element of a second-degree murder conviction. A co-defendant pleaded guilty to homicide and was sentenced to 13 to 30 years.

Nutrition Group Announces Some News In Several Beaver County School Cafeterias

This is National School Breakfast Week, according to Nicole Holt, a member of the Nutrition Group that is in charge of food service in the Central Valley School District, Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano reports.  She said a competition  in all the elementary schools  to see which class has the most breakfast tickets  will win a pizza party.  She said the event counts for reimbursible lunches.  Aliquippa School District’s  food service director is  Mrs. Lou Ann Schmitt   and she shared information that Aliquippa Elementary School is having Wellness Day  tomorrow.  Each student can taste the carrot raisin salad.”   that is being prepared for the event, which  contains a grain..   She said they will receive a sticker for tasting the salad. Mrs. Schmitt  provides the school board with a monthly report that is presented at their regular meeting .  She said the group’s chef prepares a plan for the program , and she tweaks them to make the menus happen.  She has 22  cafeteria workers in the 2 schools.Amelia Fronzaglia has been making homemade pizza for the schools for many  years. She said the students really enjoy it..Ms. Holt said that Central Valley  they are offering  Smart Snack Ice Cream , which is calorie and sugar regulated  less calories, not full of fat.”, She said that  it has taken off tremendously.” She said they have a decent variety  of ala carte items, as does Aliquippa.  Ms. Holt said soft whole grain pretzels are offered , and a variety of baked and reduced fat snacks. At Hopewell Cassidy Hall said that menus are tailored for the area .  She said her staff meets with  the students, they are called “yak” meetings and they provide ideas on what to serve .  She said the youth advisory council is for grades k-12. Hopewell Junior High School Students Visit Univ. Of Pittsburgh And The VA

Five seventh and eighh grade  girls from Hopewell Junior high School visited the University of Pittsburgh  Human Enginnering and Research Lab  and the Pittsburgh Veterans Administration Hospital, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano.  A German professor, according to teacher  Paula Kosnik, heads the lab.  She said the girls saw a video to acclamate them with the program  as to why they are helping vets to get limbs replaced with technology available .  Beds , kitchens, and exercise equipment  are being designed to accomodate the vets who are disabled. The program, Mrs. Kosnik said is a part of STEM  called “Tour Your Future”  showing different areas where girls  can find occupations. On March 13 the girls will tour the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium.

Jury Deliberations Resume Today In Beaver County Murder Re-Trial

Jurors resume deliberations today in the Beaver County retrial of a local man charged in the 2012 slaying of a pregnant woman and her unborn child. State Rep. Aaron Bernstine To Hold Open House Today; Appears On Beaver County Radio w/ Matt Drzik

10th District State Representative Aaron Bernstine will be holding an Open House at his Ellwood City office this afternoon. The Open House will take place from 3 until 6:30 p-m. Bernstine told Matt Drzik on AM Beaver County this morning that it’s an opportunity for residents to learn more about what he and his staff can do for them. Bernstine defeated the incumbent Democrat, Jarret Gibbons, back in November. The event is open to all residents of the district.

Japanese Flag Presented To A Marine’s Great Nephew Saturday

The Battle of Iwo  Jima was during World War II and Edgar Lane, Sr. of New Brighton had joined the Marines and served there, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano.   Mr. Lane, brought home a Japanese  flag from the war and never discussed it, and  and was passed down to  His granddaughter Cindy.  the flag’s owner, Shiro Koga was killed in the war  Mrs. Kester volunteers at the Air  Heritage Museum in Chippewa Township and brought the flag to the museum to  show the guys.”.  Yoshihiro Yoshimura who moved to Pittsburgh from Japan  and came to Air Heritage to see the planes  was at the airport on November 12 and helped to get the ball rolling to find its owner. A news broadcast on RKB News in Japan  made it possible to locate Shiro Koga’s great nephew Eusike Oniike, who lives in Fukuoka City The event was very very emotional  for Kester and   Oniike.. Oniike travelled the 14 hours to  Pittsburgh International Airport on Friday, and in ceremony that was a “once in a lifetime event”  was held Saturday afternoon   at Air Heritage. The silk flag,  with the  sun in the middle, and writings from Koga’s nephew’s family, was tattered , but it contained  family members names , he carried it everywhere so he could feel his family was with him for his safe return He was the 9th of 10 children in the family It took 72 years and a news broadcast to  return the flag.,  The ceremony, and luncheon was  attended by approximately 75 persons.   Oniike, speaking to the group through an interpreter said , “I pray for peace in the world and that no war will occur between the United States and Japan again. Kester was scheduled to take him on a tour of Pittsburgh yesterday. He returns to Japan today with his photographer/interpreter.

Today Is Lymphedema Awareness Day

Today is Lymphedema Awareness Day, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano.  Lymphedema is a chronic swelling  that occurs when lymph nodes are removed or damaged during cancer surgery, or from an injury’. Medicare doesn’t’ cover the cost of compression hose or or sleeves to help treat the issues that are arise from Lymphedema.  A pump to redirect protein rich fluid is also very costly  There are treatments available from physical therapists if recommended by the patients doctors. Bills have been introduced in Congress, with the hope of them passing so that Social Security and medicare cover the  cost of the necessary. This entire month is dedicated to Lymphedema Awareness.

Aaron Bernstine Discusses Business Growth, Open House With Matt Drzik

District 10 State Reprenstive Aaron Bernstine joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to discuss his plans to create job opportunities in his District (which includes Beaver Falls), and an Open House that he is holding on March 6th at his office on Line Ave. in Ellwood City. The event will be from 3:00 to 6:00 pm tonight, and it is free to the public.
