70th Anniversary Moments – John Nuzzo

This year commemorates the 70th anniversary of when Beaver County’s first radio station, WBVP, was heard over the airwaves for the the first time on May 25, 1948.  To mark the historical event, each week, another “70th Anniversary Moment” will be showcased on the airwaves and published on the station’s online feeds.

The “Morning Man” has always been one of the most prominent segments of the broadcast day, and typically, A radio station will search far and wide to find a person with just the right mix of talent, humor, and ability to relate to the listeners to fill this role.  A couple weeks ago in the “70th Anniversary Moments” series,  we looked at the first “Morning Man” for WBVP,  Arnold Felsher.  Today we will reflect on the man the guided Beaver County mornings for over twenty years in more recent days, John Nuzzo.

John Nuzzo. Circa 2010.

John Nuzzo was the youngest of twelve children growing up in nearby New Castle.  Being the youngest of so many siblings, John, no doubt, learned at a very young age to speak up in order to be heard or noticed among all the family members in the house.  That household probably also helped develop John’s keen sense of humor and quick wit and eventually led to Nuzzo doing some stand up comedy work.

Before starting at WBVP in 1992, John had worked at WKST in New Castle, as well as radio stations in New Hampshire.  Upon being hired as the  WBVP morning show host and Program Director, John immediately put his talents to work and introduced innovative new ideas to the line up including “Ask The Commissioners”, which is still airs on WBVP and WMBA on the first Thursday of each month.   John also coined the name, “A.M. Beaver County”, as the official moniker of the morning time slot that is also still in use.  Listeners to “A.M. Beaver County”  in John’s era were treated to his daily “Brain Tweezer”, a popular trivia question guessing game that would have people trying to call in and correctly answer John’s query , at times, for the entire remainder of his program.

John Nuzzo and Beaver County Commissioner Jimmy Albert at The Beaver County Airshow in 1997.

John Nuzzo was also very instrumental at forging relationships in the community on behalf of WBVP, and later on WBVP and WMBA.  During his tenure, the radio stations began to appear at  various county wide events like The Beaver County Maple Syrup Festival and The Beaver County Airshow.  He also began a popular monthly interview series with experts from Penn State Cooperative Extension that is still on the air.  Nuzzo also convinced station management in 1999 that this  newfangled thing called “the internet” was worth looking into and helped arrange for and set up the station’s first email account and website

John Nuzzo helped open other doors and create new opportunities for WBVP and WMBA.  In 2008, he recruited fellow New Castle broadcaster, Gary West, to host “A.M. Beaver County”, so John could then hold court in a new three hour local talk show, “The John Nuzzo Show”, that aired from 9 A.M. until Noon, which is where John stayed up until his retirement in 2014.

“70th Anniversary Moments” is presented by  Albert’s Heating, Cooling and Plumbing, The Beaver Falls Municipal Authority, Freedom United Federal Credit Union, Laughlin Insurance Agency and Rochester Manor and Villa.

Aliquippa opens Head Football Coaching position. (UPDATED With Sandy Giordano’s Report!)

The Aliquippa school board met Wednesday night February 21, 2018 to decide whether to open up the head coaching position for the high school football team. The school board voted 6 to 3  to open up the position which means the end of an era for now  former coach Mike Zmijanac who had been at the helm for the last 21 years. Zmijanac had led Quips on and impressive run during his tenure.  Zmijanac is an Aliquippa graduate, a retired Aliquippa teacher and is recognized as one of the greatest coaches in WPIAL history. He is 13th on the WPIAL all-time list for wins and his record in 21 seasons is 237-36. His .868 winning percentage is the best among any WPIAL coach with more than 200 wins. Zmijanac also is one of only eight WPIAL coaches who have won six championships, and he has guided the Quips to a WPIAL title game a record 10 consecutive seasons. In Zmijanac’s 21 seasons, the Quips have played for a WPIAL title 13 times and a PIAA title four times. Theschool board has now said they will advertise the position of Head Football Coach with letter of interest and resume to be turned in by March 9.”. People like coaching legend Joe Hamilton and former Blackhawk AD Jack Fullen were among the many people who showed up in support  for coach Zmijanac at the meeting .  Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano was at last night’s meeting and filed this report….

County Gains$7.2 Million From Property Tax Increase

At their regular work session today, Beaver County Commissioners got a report from budget director Ricardo Luckow concerning financial matters. Luckow reported last year’s property tax increase brought in 7.2 million dollars in additional revenue. Also, the county gained 2.1 million dollars in savings from refinancing bonds. With 71 retirements last year, the county work force is younger and as a result, health care costs dropped 20 percent.

Luckow also reported the county has 16 hundred square feet of vacant office space still available at the human services building in Beaver Falls. The space has been vacant for many months. Luckow recommends getting a private business of non profit group as a new tenant. The county is going to handle the real estate work, saving on fees if a professional firm was hired to handle the leasing.

Bucs sign Michael Saunders to Minor League deal with Spring Training invite!!!

The Pirates have signed outfielder Michael Saunders to a Minor League contract with an invite to Major League Spring Training, the team announced Wednesday.

Saunders will wear No. 12 with Pittsburgh.

The 31-year-old was an All-Star in 2016 with the Blue Jays after hitting .298/.372/.551 with 16 home runs and a .923 OPS in the first half. But he slumped heavily in the second half, hitting .178/.282/.357 with eight homers and a .639 OPS.

Saunders signed as a free agent with the Phillies last winter on a one-year, $9 million deal, but was unable to bounce back in 2017. He hit just .205/.257/.360 with six homers and a .617 OPS in 61 games before Philadelphia released him in June.

The Blue Jays brought Saunders back on a Minor League deal about a week later, and he played 12 games for Toronto in September before again becoming a free agent.
