It’s been a year since Gov. Tom Wolf declared a disaster emergency regarding the opioid crisis. PA Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine says it has enabled her department and 15 other state agencies to coordinate their response. Levine says the Governor would like to go further and declare a public health emergency, adding the Governor’s office is working with state lawmakers, since such a declaration would need legislative approval.
According to this week’s Triple-A gas price report prices in Western Pennsylvania are almost two cents cheaper this week at $2.44 per gallon. The national gas price average is $2.24 and has declined for 12 weeks in a row. The national average is three-cents cheaper on the week, 20-cents cheaper than last month and 25-cents cheaper year-over-year.
Police are investigating a burglary at a motorcycle shop in Moon Township. The incident happened around 1 a.m. Tuesday at All Pro Motorsports on University Boulevard. Gov. Tom Wolf is stepping up the fight against climate change and setting targets to slash Pennsylvania’s greenhouse gas emissions over the coming decades. Wolf, a Democrat, is planning to sign an executive order Tuesday committing his administration to meeting the goals. The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions says 20 states already set such targets, but Pennsylvania is among the nation’s biggest polluters. Making major progress would likely require agreements with lawmakers.
It’s unlikely the historic Fallston Bridge in Beaver county will reopen to vehicle traffic. Representatives with the Historic Fallston Bridge Commission say it would cost the county more than two million dollars to bring the span back up to code for vehicles. The cost to make it safe for pedestrian use is under 500-grand, according to the Beaver County Times. The commission is working on fundraising now to pay for the needed renovation work.
The name of the person killed in that fatal Beaver County crash that occurred over the weekend has just been released. I just got off the phone with Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Pasquale. He tells me that 33-year-old Kyle Counce of Brighton Township was killed in that crash, which happened on Pine Grove Road in Brighton Township Saturday morning. It’s believed that Counce – who was driving at the time – was traveling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle went out of control and struck a tree. Still no word from the Brighton Township police department as to the identity of the passenger who was severely injured in the accident.

The good work of non-profit organizations continues to be recognized moving into 2019, as Dr. Pete Birchler from the Chiropractic Health Center in Chippewa presented January’s edition of “People Purpose Planet” on A.M Beaver County with Matt Drzik.
This month focuses on the Coalition For Christian Outreach, a national organization that helps college students learn a faith-based, hands-on approach to life in the “real world”; one that takes the focus away from the typical book-based academia most colleges teach. Geneva College graduate (and former Beaver County Radio intern) Caleb Musselman is the CCO leader for the Beaver Falls college, and he spoke about the purpose behind the CCO and the activities/events that promote its practices.
One of these events is the upcoming Jubilee conference in Pittsburgh in late February, an event in which Dr. Birchler is helping by donating proceeds to the CCO and Geneva College for students to go to the event. (See video for further details.)

The South Butler County School District is operating on a “modified lockdown.” and a student, Jason Bowen, has been taken into police custody.
The district was alerted to “a serious threat to student safety,” by the Penn Township Police Department.
Authorities say Bowen posted a video of himself firing an AK-style rifle to Snapchat with the caption “Training for Prom Walk.” Police say they also found drugs and brass knuckles in his bedroom.
