A senior Republican state lawmaker says Pennsylvania should try to save its nuclear power plants in case it needs a more diverse energy supply in the future. Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman said Monday that one possible approach would give Pennsylvania’s five nuclear plants the same preferential treatment as solar power, wind power and several other niche energy sources under a 2004 state law that requires utilities to buy certain amounts of electricity from them.

Two more local teams will punch their tickets to the Petersen Events Center for the WPIAL basketball championships tonight on Beaver County Radio. Game 1 pits Rochester and Quigley Catholic in the 1A Girls’ semifinals at North Hills, and pregame coverage begins on Beaver County Radio at 5:30. The second game of the doubleheader takes us to Canon-McMillan as Our Lady of Sacred Heart battles South Side Beaver for a spot in the 2A Boys’ championship. Coverage begins for that game at 7:30, and the winners of tonight’s games advance to the finals on Friday.

Duquesne Light reported this morning that there are 481 homes without power due to the high winds on Sunday. The spokesperson said that 80 additional contract line workers are working with crews to restore power.

In game two of the WBVP doubleheader, Tom Hays and Jason Colangelo had the call from North Allegheny High School as North Catholic battled Aliquippa in the 3A playoffs. It was a game of runs early going back and fourth. It was Aliquippa with the first quarter lead 17-13. Then North Catholic went on a run and took the lead at the half 28-26. Then it was all North Catholic. They jumped out to a big lead and had a 49-38 lead after three, then won the game 61-49. North Catholic will play Lincoln Park at the Pete Thursday for the 3A WPIAL Championship. For Aliquippa they have a spot in the 3A playoffs and will wait an opponent.
