Besty DeVos Facing Sharp Pushback Over Proposal To Cut Federal Funding To Special Olympics

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is facing sharp pushback over a proposal to cut federal funding to the Special Olympics. Celebrities, politicians and activists have taken to social media to rebuke DeVos for her plan to cut funding for the group as part of $7 billion in reductions in 2020. The organization received $17.6 million from the Education Department this year, but DeVos says it should be supported through philanthropy.

Attorney General William Barr To Release Edited Mueller Report To Congress In April; Plans to Testify

Attorney General William Barr is combing through the special counsel’s report on the Russia probe, removing grand jury and classified information in hopes of releasing it in April and testifying to Congress. That’s according to Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, who had dinner with Barr on Tuesday. Graham tells The Associated Press the attorney general is going through the report now to make sure there’s nothing that could compromise national security or intelligence “sources and methods.”

Prosecutors’ Decision To Drop Charges Against Smollett Raises More Questions

Prosecutors offered little explanation when dropping charges against “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett in a decision that infuriated Chicago’s mayor and police chief. The move also raised more questions. Because despite dropping 16 felony counts related to making a false police report, prosecutors insist Smollett faked a racist, anti-gay attack on himself. Smollett’s attorney said Wednesday that the men who attacked him are lying about Smollett’s involvement.

Jury Outside Philadelphia Weighing Death Penalty Or Life In Prison For Raping, Murdering, Dismembering His Girlfriend’s 14-Year-Old Daughter

A jury outside Philadelphia is weighing the death penalty or life in prison for a man who pleaded guilty to raping, strangling and dismembering his girlfriend’s 14-year-old daughter. Wednesday is the second day of deliberations. Jacob Sullivan pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and related charges in the 2016 slaying of Grace Packer. Grace’s mother, Sara Packer, is due to plead guilty Wednesday for her role. Prosecutors say Sullivan acted out a rape-murder fantasy he shared with Sara Packer.

BREAKING NEWS: Pittsburgh City Council Gives Tentative Approval To Gun-Control Legislation

The Pittsburgh City Council has given tentative approval to gun-control legislation introduced in the wake of the synagogue massacre. The legislation would place restrictions on military-style assault weapons like the AR-15 rifle that authorities say was used in the attack that killed 11 and wounded seven. Council members voted 6-3 on Wednesday to pass it. A final vote will take place next week. Gun-rights supporters say they’ll file suit against the city if the bills go through.

Pennsylvania To Receive Federal Grants To Help State Residents Fight Opioid Addiction

Pennsylvania is setting up a $15 million pilot program to give support services and housing help for state residents fighting opioid addiction. The Wolf administration said Wednesday the federal grants aim to encourage treatment and recovery and reduce overdose deaths. Housing aid could include temporary rent assistance. The support services could include applying for food stamps or linking people with recovery services. The money is going to 16 agencies and health entities.

Monaca Receives Award And Grant

State Representative Rob Matzie has announced that the Monaca Gateway Project has been awarded a $1 million grant to improve Pennsylvania Avenue in town…The grant will be used to build motorist and pedestrian improvements between 13th and 16th Streets, including signal upgrades at 14th Street, and the creation of a right-turn lane for eastbound traffic to improve traffic flow. Beaver County Radio newsman Pat Septak spoke with Monaca borough manager Mario Leone, who had this reaction to the news…

Also included in the project is repairing and upgrading sidewalks and improvements of the streetscape, including better lighting, the addition of plants, bicycle racks and storm water upgrades. Leone tells Septak that the goal is not just to increase accessibility but also to increase pedestrian safety…

Septak asked Leone how soon construction will begin on the project…

The grant was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority through its Multimodal Transportation Fund. The fund provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure safe transportation is available to all Pennsylvania residents.

And there’s more good news out of Monaca….Monaca Borough recently received the SUSTAINABLE PITTSBURGH award for a small municipality . The borough was the top scorer in their division for 2018-19, according to Leone. Mayor Simon Short, Neighborhood Service officer, Nick Vorrias, and Leone attended the award presentation on Thursday at PNC Park’s Jim Beam Club.  Leone says the group received a trophy and recognition accepted by Vorrias…
