4 dead in shooting at illegal gambling site in Brooklyn
NEW YORK (AP) — Four people were killed and three others were wounded in an early Saturday shooting at an illegal gambling club in New York City, police said.
The six men and one woman were shot just before 7 a.m. inside a building in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said four men were dead at the scene and the others were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The victims, who have not been identified, ranged in age from 32 to 49, Shea said at a briefing near the shooting. Two may have lived out of state and the rest were from neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn, Shea added.
One additional person was injured fleeing.
No arrests have been made, and police do not know the motive for the shootings, Shea said. He said two guns were found at the scene and more could potentially be found.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Twitter that the city “awoke to senseless gun violence.”
The Democrat added, “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it until I can’t anymore: we have an epidemic of gun violence that spares no community — and it won’t stop until we get guns off our streets once and for all.”
The shooting was the second mass killing in New York in a week in a city that has seen a marked drop in homicides in recent years. Four homeless men were beaten to death by another homeless man Oct. 5 in the Chinatown neighborhood. In 2000, there were more than 600 homicides in the city. Last year, there were fewer than 300.
A sign on the building where the bloodshed occurred says Triple A Aces. Shea said there was “evidence of gambling” including cards and dice inside.
The gambling operation was unlicensed but police had not previously received any complaints about the location, Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison said.
Crime scene tape surrounded the building Saturday morning and investigators in white jumpsuits could be seen going in and out.
The block where the shots rang out has empty storefronts and boarded-up buildings as well as renovated townhouses.

1 dead, 3 missing after hotel collapse in New Orleans

1 dead, 3 missing after hotel collapse in

New ORLEANS (AP) — A Hard Rock Hotel under construction at the edge of New Orleans’ historic French Quarter collapsed Saturday morning, leaving at least one person dead and three unaccounted for, authorities said.
City officials and Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards confirmed the death.
The building was under construction at the corner of Rampart Street and Canal Street, a broad boulevard just outside the Quarter, lined with restaurants hotels and retailers. Canal, which carries six lanes of traffic divided by a wide median where streetcars roll, separates the Quarter from the city’s main business district.
WWL-TV aired and tweeted a viewer’s dramatic video of the collapse, showing upper floors falling on top of each other before one side of the building toppled to the ground.
Another video on social media was taken by someone aboard one of the city’s famous streetcars as it approached the site while the building was collapsing. It showed what looked like a metal structure — part of the building or a piece of construction equipment — tumbling to the ground and people running from the scene as clouds of dust billowed up and around the streetcar, obscuring the view like a thick fog.
Authorities say 18 people were taken to a hospital for treatment. All were considered stable.
Edwards urged people to stay away from the area, which was still considered unstable. An unsupported crane listed away from the building site. As dust settled following the morning collapse, twisted metal, concrete pilings and other wreckage covered part of Rampart Street.
“It was a deep rumbling sound,” Matt Worges, who saw the collapse from a nearby building, told The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate. “Like an airplane maybe. It drew my head immediately.”

“Thru the Eyes of Sly Washington” U.S.C. vs Moon Friday October 12, 2019

(Moon Twp., PA.) The Moon Tigers’ defense came up big on Friday night defeating the Upper St Clair Panthers 20-6. Moon scored the game’s first touchdown late into the first quarter with a five yard run from Jamal Littlejohn. Eighteen seconds later, Upper St Clair’s quarterback, Ethan Bahlem, broke off a 78 yard touchdown run. That would be the Panthers only score, for the Tigers tenacious defense would not allow anymore points. The Tigers defense rattled the Panther’s offense with a few forced turnovers, including a 60 yard interception that would later set up an 18 yard touchdown from Jamal Littlejohn, making that his second touchdown of the night. The Moon victory takes their record to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in section play. With the win Moon pulls into a three way tie with Peters Twp., who the Tigers defeated last week, and Bethel Park, who defeated the Tigers. While we don’t know the outcome oft he conference at this point we now know the Tiger have secured a WPIAL playoff spot with last nights victory. The Panthers fall to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in section play on the season.

Neshannock Routs Freedom 49-21

Freedom fumbled the ball on the first drive of the game and that set the stage for what was in store for the evening. Neshannock capitalized on the turnover with a 1 yard QB sneak by Jason Nativio, bringing the score to 7-0. Freedom tied it up at 7 with their own 1 yard run by Tyrique Campbell. Neshannock retook the lead with an 8 yard run by Braden Gennock, butFreedom tied it up again with an 8 yard TD catch by Brandon Pratt. Neshannock received the ball with a few seconds left in the half, but instead of kneeling the ball, a 60 yard completion set up a 2 yard TD run from Braden Gennock. At the half, the score was 21-14.

Freedom managed to capture their first 2 score lead of the night after a 41 yard TD catch by Ethan Weatherby. 1 play and a 79 yard TD catch from Reiker Welling later, Freedom was back within a score 28-21.
