Mike Piazza presented as manager of Italy’s baseball team

Mike Piazza presented as manager of Italy’s baseball team
By ANDREW DAMPF AP Sports Writer
ROME (AP) — Coaching Italy’s national baseball team fits in perfectly with Mike Piazza’s current lifestyle.
The Hall of Fame catcher and his family have been living in Italy for several years since Piazza’s brief stint as owner of a local soccer club.
Speaking at his introduction at the Italian Olympic Committee on Friday, Piazza says “my heart is in Italy now. … Italy is a part of me.”
The 51-year-old Piazza, who was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, is of Italian ancestry. While his contract expires at the end of next year, Piazza is expected to manage Italy at least through the 2021 World Baseball Classic.
Piazza played for Italy at the 2006 Classic and was Italy’s hitting coach at the 2009 and 2013 WBC tournaments.
In 2016, he bought control of third-division soccer club Reggiana, which dropped out of Serie C after the 2017-18 season.
Piazza replaces Gilberto Gerali, who resigned when Italy failed to qualify for next year’s Tokyo Olympics.
Piazza says “we need to re-establish our place as one of the elite programs in Europe. So we have a lot of work to do.”

Man Stole Strange List of Items from Three Pittsburgh Stores in 20-Minute Span, Police Say

A man is behind bars after police said he stole a strange list of items from three Pittsburgh stores in a 20-minute span. According to a police criminal complaint, the crimes happened early Wednesday on Forbes Avenue and Atwood Street in the Oakland section of the city. But the crimes didn’t really qualify as robberies because of what 28-year-old Byron Leverette is accused of stealing. Police say Leverette started his spree by stealing laundry detergent at the Rite Aid there. According to court documents, he grabbed the detergent, knocked down the manager standing at the entrance and stepped on her. Police say Leverette then came out of the Rite Aid with two detergents in hand, threw one at the manager and threw the other in the middle of the street when customers tried to top him. Investigators said Leverette then ran into the Marathon gas station and stole gloves before entering the CVS down the street on Forbes Avenue. Inside the CVS, officers found Leverette with two containers of Tide laundry detergent and arrested him. He’s is being charged with two counts of retail theft.

10 Animals Killed in Fire at Ohio’s African Safari Wildlife Park

A blaze killed 10 exotic animals Thursday that were inside a barn at African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton near Sandusky in northern Ohio. Police responded last night to the park and found a zebra running loose and one of the barns engulfed in flames. Firefighters battled the blaze for more than an hour before getting it under control. The 10 animals that died inside the structure included three bongos, three giraffes, three red river hogs, and one springbok. The park was scheduled to be closed on Thanksgiving, according to the website, and police say the only person on the property at the time of the blaze was a manager/gamekeeper who lived there. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, which will be turned over to the state fire marshal’s office. Investigators are expected to be back at the site today.
