WASHINGTON (AP) — One of the nation’s largest labor unions is unveiling plans to invest $150 million in a nationwide campaign to help defeat President Donald Trump. The sweeping effort is focused on eight battleground states and voters of color who typically don’t vote. The investment marks the largest voter engagement and turnout operation in the history of the Service Employees International Union, which claims nearly 2 million members. The campaign will span 40 states and target 6 million voters focused largely in Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. Union president Mary Kay Henry says Trump is “systematically unwinding and attacking unions.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s campaign is stepping up its outreach to black Americans as it tries to claw away support from the traditionally Democratic voting bloc ahead of November’s general election. Trump’s campaign is announcing Wednesday that it is opening 15 “Black Voices for Trump Community Centers” in the coming weeks in major cities in battleground states. The offices will feature a line of campaign swag adopting the “woke” label, videos of prominent Trump surrogates like Diamond and Silk explaining their support for the president and pamphlets outlining the president’s record. The retail spaces will be the campaign’s first field offices targeted at a specific demographic group.

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian officials say they won’t provide security for Prince Harry and his wife Meghan when they step back from royal duties. A spokeswoman for Canada’s public safety minister said Thursday “the assistance will cease in the coming weeks, in keeping with their change in status.” Harry and Meghan, say they will walk away from most royal duties starting March 31, give up public funding and try to become financially independent. Power said that as duke and duchess of Sussex, they have been considered “internationally protected persons” who warranted security measures under international treaty.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s health secretary says her agency expects to finish customizing pandemic flu plans in the coming days for the COVID-19 virus, but notes the state has yet to identify a case of infection. Dr. Rachel Levine said in a Capitol news conference Wednesday that monitoring and testing of travelers from China is continuing, although officials aren’t disclosing how many. The Health Department has plans to quickly notify the public if a case is confirmed within Pennsylvania. She says the state has supplies of personal protective equipment, but those stockpiles may be drawn down if there is a significant spread of the virus.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A federal prosecutor has moved to block plans to open what could be the nation’s first medically supervised injection site in Philadelphia. U.S. Attorney William McSwain has filed notice that he will appeal a judge’s ruling this week that found the plan legal. He has also asked a federal judge to stay the decision while the appeal unfolds. The move comes after residents shouted down former Gov. Ed Rendell and other Safehouse organizers at a press conference Wednesday. They want to open the facility at a medical complex in south Philadelphia, hoping it could save lives as the city grapples with about 1,100 overdose deaths each year.

LEBANON, Pa. (AP) — A former Pennsylvania state lawmaker charged last fall with possession of child pornography has admitted to the charges. Mike Folmer pleaded guilty Thursday in Lebanon County court to three counts of possessing child porn and one count of criminal use of a communications facility for having items on his cellphone. He did not comment as he left the courtroom, and no date has been set for his sentencing. He also will be evaluated as potentially violent sexual offense under state laws. Folmer was a sitting four-term state senator last September when police arrested and charged him, saying a search of his cellphone on a warrant had turned up two images of child pornography.
