Altuve booed, nicked by pitch in spring debut for Astros
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — José Altuve was loudly booed, called a cheater and even plunked by a pitch in his spring training debut for the Houston Astros. Altuve and some of his high-profile teammates played on the road for the first time in the exhibition season, beating the Detroit Tigers 11-1 in Lakeland, Florida. The fans heckled the Astros who were implicated in the sign-stealing scandal that has rocked baseball. Elsewhere in spring training, Gerrit Cole struck out two in a hitless inning during his debut for the New York Yankees and Mookie Betts got two hits for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Creators of original Phanatic call redesign ‘an affront’

Creators of original Phanatic call redesign ‘an affront’
NEW YORK (AP) — The creators of the original Phillie Phanatic accused the Philadelphia Phillies of “an affront to our intellectual property rights and to Phillies fans everywhere” with the team’s redesign of the 42-year-old mascot. The Phillies unveiled the redesign of the green mascot before Sunday’s exhibition game against Pittsburgh. Philadelphia sued Harrison/Erickson, the New York company that created the Phanatic, last August in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. The team alleged Harrison/Erickson threatened to terminate the Phillies’ rights to the Phanatic as of June 15 and “make the Phanatic a free agent” unless the team renegotiated its 1984 rights deals.

Supporters of Mike Bloomberg Escalating Attacks on Bernie Sanders Over Guns

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Supporters of former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg are escalating their attacks on Bernie Sanders over his record on gun control ahead of Tuesday night’s high-stakes Democratic debate in South Carolina. Five Bloomberg backers, all of them current or former black officials, are homing in on Sanders’ record on guns and criminal justice as particular areas of concern. As the Vermont senator becomes the front-runner in the Democratic presidential primary, the Bloomberg backers say, more scrutiny should be paid to his past votes against the landmark gun control law known as the Brady Bill and his opposition to legislation that would allow gun manufacturers to be sued.

Pennsylvania May Tweak New Law to Avoid Vote-Counting Logjam

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A top Pennsylvania lawmaker says the Legislature may change Pennsylvania’s sweeping 4-month-old election law in an effort to avoid a logjam of mail-in ballots that could extend vote-counting in the presidential race for days afterward. Republican House Majority Leader Bryan Cutler says the law may be changed to let county election officials open envelopes that contain mail-in ballots before the polls close at 8 p.m. The new voting law lets any voter mail in a ballot for any reason, where the state had previously restricted mail-in ballots to “absentee” voters who met a narrow set of reasons.
