Mayor: Mummers Parade ‘in Jeopardy’ for Repeated Blackface

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney has warned residents he will end the city’s annual Mummers Parade if organizers don’t curtail participants’ inappropriate behavior, including blackface. Kenney’s spokesperson says the mayor sent a letter Tuesday to the organizers of the four Mummers divisions and requested they meet with officials following another blackface controversy at this year’s event. The New Year’s Day parade has a long history of racially and socially offensive displays. The parade features ornate costumes and musical performances and attracts thousands of spectators each year.

Pennsylvania High Court Upholds Old Precedent in Fracking

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (AP) — The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled to uphold a legal principle that allows drillers to drain oil and natural gas from outside their property lines. The court overturned a 2018 decision by the lower Superior Court on Wednesday that said the “rule of capture” does not cover hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the rule has been applied throughout the United States since at lease 1889. The rule states that oil and gas in reservoirs belongs to whomever pulls it from a well first. The court did not rule on what happens if a fracking operation physically crosses a property boundary, in which case a company could be subject to a trespassing claim.

Another Gun Found at Pittsburgh International Airport’s Security Checkpoint

A man who had been watching the impeachment trial of President Trump on Tuesday allegedly choked and punched his girlfriend in a Pennsylvania motel room…when she wanted to watch something else. The woman told police that 53-year-old Lonnie Clark, who lives at the northern York County motel, had been drinking alcohol all day while watching the impeachment trial and became upset when she wanted to change the channel. She was eventually able to get away and called 9-1-1. Clark faces charges of strangulation, simple assault and harassment. He later told police he lost his cool because he didn’t want to miss any of the impeachment trial.

Local Woman Stabbed in Face During Fight Over Bag of Shrimp

A woman was taken to a hospital last week after being stabbed in the face by another woman during a fight over shrimp, police said. It happened Jan. 15 at a home on Cedar Avenue on Pittsburgh’s North Side when the women got into an argument over a bag of shrimp. One woman hit the other with a stick. The second woman then grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed the first woman in the face, police said. Police haven’t released the condition of the stabbing victim. No word yet if either woman is facing charges.

BF Business District Authority To Hold First Chili “Walk-Off” On January 25

Usually it’s the chefs of the world cooking up the chili to compete against each other in chili cook-offs. But this time it’s not the restaurants, bars, and caterers serving up the saucy delight…rather, it’s the local thrift stores, clothing stores and even the local radio stations displaying the results of their recipes.

The Beaver Falls Business District Authority is holding its first ever Chili Walk-Off from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, January 25. Twelve different businesses in the city (including Beaver County Radio) will be presenting their chili for those to try and vote on. Each business will have voting at its location, and those who vote will be eligible for gift cards from these businesses.

District Authority board members Brenda Mellan & Denise Molchen-Donnelly joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to talk about the Walk-Off, how it all came about, and what to expect. They also talked about the upcoming events that the District Authority is holding, how one can become a member, and the hopes to fill the vacant buildings within the city.
