US Consumer Inflation up 6.8% in Past Year, Most Since 1982

By MARTIN CRUTSINGER AP Economics Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) — Prices for U.S. consumers jumped 6.8% in November compared with a year earlier as surging costs for food, energy, housing and other items left Americans enduring their highest annual inflation rate since 1982. The Labor Department also reported Friday that from October to November, prices jumped 0.8%. Inflation has been intensifying pressure on consumers, especially lower-income households and particularly for everyday necessities. It has also negated the higher wages many workers have received, complicated the Federal Reserve’s plans to reduce its aid for the economy and coincided with flagging public support for President Joe Biden.

Bob Dole Honored at National Cathedral, World War II Memorial

By WILL WEISSERT Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — Bob Dole is being honored Friday at Washington National Cathedral as top leaders from both parties gathered to display the kind of bipartisanship now rare in modern government. Dole’s flag-draped casket was carried into the sanctuary by a military honor guard as the congregation stood and Dole’s wife, former North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole, and daughter, Robin, looked on. Joining President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden were top leaders of Congress at the invitation-only ceremony along with former Vice President Mike Pence and actor Tom Hanks and former President Bill Clinton, who beat Dole to win reelection as president in 1996. Dole’s casket will later travel to the World War II Memorial on the National Mall for a public “celebration of life.”

He last played in the NFL in 2019 and officially retired in June.

Supreme Court Won’t Stop Texas Abortion Ban, But Lets Clinics Sue

(File Photo)
By MARK SHERMAN Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is leaving in place for now Texas’ ban on most abortions. The justices ruled on Friday that Texas abortion providers can sue over the state’s ban on most abortions, but for now the law still stands. The court acted three months after the law went into effect and more than a month after hearing arguments over the law that makes abortion illegal after cardiac activity is detected in an embryo. That’s around six weeks, before some women even know they are pregnant. There are no exceptions for rape or incest.  The same federal judge who already has once blocked the law almost certainly will be asked to do so again.
