Jason Fennell (1983-2025)

Jason Fennell, 42, of Baden, passed away on October 31st, 2025, at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, with loving family by his side. He was born in Sewickley on June 28, 1983, the son of Cheryl Rowley Fennell. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his two daughters, Joselyn Hallahan & Kylee Fennell, his sister, Justine Fennell, his grandmothers, Phyllis Rowley and Regina Wilson and an aunt, Tanya (Michael) Ruchti. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kermeth Rowley; aunt, Mary (George) Fraser and uncle, Gary Hall.

Jason graduated from Ambridge High School in 2002. He worked for Atlas in their warehouse as a Customer Service Representative for 13 years.  In Jason’s spare time, he loved to go fishing and play video games. He was soft-spoken and truly a kind soul, who loved his daughters, endlessly.  He will be deeply missed and loved, always.

In accordance with Jason’s wishes, he will be cremated. No services are being held. Arrangements have been entrusted to the John Syka Funeral Home, Inc. 833, Kennedy Drive, Ambridge.

Darlington man charged and jailed after shooting a woman during an argument in Darlington Township

(Darlington Township, PA) Forty-nine-year-old Chris Shutack of Darlington is facing charges of aggravated assault and related charges after police confirm he shot Anna Vellone of Columbiana, Ohio in her leg during a verbal altercation in Darlington Township on Saturday. The incident occurred at 102 Moffett Drive at around 5 a.m. Police also note that Shutack allegedly choked and pushed Vellone before shooting her in the lower leg and Vellone was taken to a Pittsburgh area hospital and is expected to recover. Records show that Shutack is in the Beaver County Jail and online court records state that he is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, strangulation, tampering with or fabricating evidence, simple assault and having a firearm while prohibited. The bail for Shutack is set at $200,000.

Pennsylvania Beef Council and PIAA Team Up for Fourth Year to Celebrate “Beef’s Best” at Fall Sports Concession Stands

(Bedford, PA) According to a release on Friday from abundance-creative.com, the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) have launched the second annual Beef’s Best Concession Stand Contest, which invites schools across Pennsylvania to show off their most creative and crowd-pleasing beef menu items. The Pennsylvania Beef Council through the NEBPI, will continue its partnership with the PIAA for the fourth year in a row. The winning school will receive a cash prize of $250, a display banner, and Beef’s Best T-shirts and a commemorative plaque, and the first 10 schools to enter will receive a swag kit that is beef-themed. Comrie makes 28 saves, Lambert scores 1st NHL goal as Jets top Penguins 5-2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Rookie forward Brad Lambert scored his first NHL goal and backup goalie Eric Comrie made 28 saves as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 Saturday.

Kyle Connor scored twice, including an empty-net goal, and Gabriel Valardi and Vladislav Namestnikov also scored for Winnipeg (9-3-0).

Sidney Crosby and Blake Lizotte scored for Pittsburgh (8-3-2). Arturs Silovs made 29 saves.

Vilardi scored 15 seconds into the game, grabbing the rebound of a shot by Josh Morrissey and banking the puck off Silovs into the net.

Lambert struck at 2:43 of the first. He was to Silovs’ right and teammate Parker Ford carried the puck behind the Penguins’ net and attempted a wrap around. The puck squirted through the crease and Lambert converted.

The Jets burst out of the gate in the second period, too. Namestnikov and Jonathan Toews rushed into the Penguins’ zone and, after Toews hesitated with the puck for a split second, the Russian winger deflected a pass behind Silovs at 1:17. It was Namestnikov’s sixth of the season.

Connor scored on a penalty shot at 12:13 of the second. Silovs misplayed the puck in the Penguins’ corner during a Pittsburgh power play and threw his stick when Connor lunged for the puck in front of an empty net.

Connor beat Silvos with a backhand shot to the glove side for what was technically a short-handed goal for his seventh of the season.

Crosby scored Pittsburgh’s first goal with 12 seconds remaining in the second, deflecting Erik Karlsson’s point shot behind Comrie.

The Penguins pulled within two goals just after the halfway point of the third. Lizotte crashed Comrie’s crease for his second goal of the season.

The Penguins kept one of the NHL’s top power plays off the scoresheet, killing all three of their penalties.

Aliquippa wins 21-14 against Trinity in playoff showdown

(Washington, Pa) The Aliquippa Quips travelled to Washington Friday night to visit the Trinity Hillers for the quarterfinal round of 2025 WPIAL playoffs.

Both teams got off to a fiery start with Aliquippa scoring on the opening drive to lead the game 7-0. Trinity soon answered on their possession marching down the field to knot the game at 7-7.

As the end of the first half was approaching Aliquippa marched down the field to 1st & Goal. With seconds left until the half, Trinity held Aliquippa at the goal line until time ran out, ending the half tied at 7-7.

Trinity started the second half with the ball. As a result, the Hillers managed to drive down the field and score 7 more making it a 14-7 game.

Aliquippa’s first possession in the second half was similar to the last in the first half. They marched down the field only to be halted by big Trinity stops.

With 6 minutes left in the game, Aliquippa managed a big run play to score and tie the game.

As the end of the game approached with the score still tied, Quip made a big pass play to grab a 21-14 lead with 20 seconds left.

Aliquippa held Trinity for the last 20 seconds and made a sack at the yard line to end the game and take the playoff victory.

Annual Beaver Falls free Christmas dinner not returning for 2025

(Beaver Falls, Pa) A yearly community free Christmas dinner will not be returning for 2025. Care Ministries, who hosts the annual event, made the announcement Friday on Facebook.

Organizers Stephen and Rebecca Ficca Salopek stated ongoing health issues as the reason for discontinuing the dinner. They added that “it has been a heart-wrenching decision” and thanked everybody for their support over the years.

The dinner was hosted annually for the last 31 years at the Beaver Falls High School.

Beaver man charged for careless driving after crashing his vehicle in Potter Township

(Potter Township, PA) Pennsylvania State Police in Beaver reported via release today that twenty-three-year-old Giovanni Hupp-Thompson of Beaver was charged for careless driving after causing a single-vehicle crash in Potter Township on the morning of October 13th, 2025. Hupp-Thompson was driving on I-376 West at 4:48 a.m. and hit a metal barrier off to the right side of the road, which caused his vehicle to flip multiple times. Hupp-Thompson was transported because of his injuries, which are unknown at this time, but police suspect them to be serious. The vehicle of Hupp-Thompson sustained damage on its drivers side panels, passenger side panels, hood and roof.

Man dies after getting hit by a vehicle in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh

(Pittsburgh, PA) According to Pittsburgh Public Safety officials recently, a seventy-one-year-old man died on Wednesday afternoon after he was hit by a car in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh the previous day. Officers were dispatched to the Forbes and Oakland Avenue intersection on Tuesday at around 4:45 a.m. First responders discovered a man with a head injury lying in the road and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Bobby Paige of McKeesport was the man that was identified as the victim by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office. The driver who hit Paige remained on the scene and it is unknown if that driver will be facing any charges at this time. Police confirm that the investigation into this incident remains ongoing and active.

A few Veterans Day events in Beaver County will honor those who served

(Beaver County, PA) Veterans Day in 2025 is on Tuesday, November 11th, when Beaver County and the United States of America will thank military veterans for their service. According to the Beaver County Times, here are a few of the events around Beaver County for Veterans Day:

  • The Beaver County Veterans Day parade begins at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Beaver County Courthouse along Third Street in Beaver. The parade is organized by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 862.
  • The third annual Veteran Appreciation Day is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 8 at the B.F. Jones Memorial Library, 663 Franklin Avenue, Aliquippa. Free event for veterans features food, coffee, live music, free activities for kids, storytime, resources for veterans and giveaways.
  • Our Lady of the Valley Parish confirmation class will host a Veterans Day breakfast for veterans and a guest from 10-11:30 a.m. Nov. 9 at the Holy Family Catholic Church social hall, 521 7th St. in New Brighton. Reservations are due by Nov. 5; email jconnelly@olotv.org or call 724-775-4111 Ext. 222.
  • Findlay Township is hosting a light lunch and entertainment for local veterans and their families at 11 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Findlay Township activity center, 310 Main St., Imperial. Reservations are required by calling 724-695-0500 Ext. 241.

Veterans Day is also a federal holiday, so both the Beaver County Courthouse and other government offices will be closed. There will also be no mail delivery in the United States on Veterans Day and many banks locally will also be closed.
