HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Mehmet Oz says he’ll renounce his dual citizenship in Turkey if he’s elected to the U.S. Senate. He’s warding off criticism from a key rival in Pennsylvania’s heated Republican primary race. Oz is the celebrity heart surgeon best known as daytime TV’s host of “The Dr. Oz Show.” He made the statement Wednesday. Oz had previously said he’d keep dual citizenship if elected so he has power to make health care decisions in Turkey for his Alzheimer’s-stricken mother. But now he says it has become a distraction in his Senate campaign. Senate historians have been unable to find a senator who maintained dual citizenship.

(Chippewa Township, PA) The Chippewa Township Board of Supervisors met Wednesday night for a meeting.  The board approved the purchase of a 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500 pickup for the street department due to the aging of current department vehicles.  Also approved was a storm drain repair project.  The repair will take place at the intersection of Woodland Road and Constitution Boulevard.  Members of the fire department were in attendance to question funding that the fire department receives from the township.  The department would like to see more funding, and suggested a one mill tax increase as a possible solution. Members of the board said that they will need to receive more detailed financial statements before they can make any decisions.  It was stated that the fire department has failed to provide statements on money they have made with fundraising and community support in recent years, only reporting their expenses. A member of the fire department responded by saying that the township shouldn’t need to know how much they make.

TOKYO (AP) — A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Fukushima in northern Japan, triggering a tsunami advisory and plunging more than 2 million homes in the Tokyo area into darkness. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there’s no longer a tsunami threat though the Japan Meteorological Agency kept its low risk advisory. The region is part of northern Japan that was devastated by a deadly 9.0 quake and tsunami 11 years ago that also caused nuclear plant meltdowns. The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant where the cooling systems failed after the 2011 disaster said workers found no abnormalities there. TV says there are reports of fire, damage to buildings and falling rocks in Fukushima. There has been no word on casualties.

Venango County DA Says Shooting Death of Peter Spencer Was Self-Defense

(AP, File Photo)
FRANKLIN, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania district attorney says a man who fatally shot a guest at his cabin nine times did so out of self-defense when the guest was threatening others with an assault rifle while high on mushrooms. Venango County District Attorney D. Shawn White said this week that no charges would be filed in the killing of 29-year-old Peter Spencer and pushed back against criticism that the investigation lacked transparency. He said the evidence supports witness accounts that Spencer was threatening others when he was shot Dec. 12. Spencer’s family and their attorney had previously criticized White for not keeping them informed.
