Biden launches Indo-Pacific trade deal, warns over inflation

TOKYO (AP) — President Joe Biden has launched a new trade deal with 12 Indo-Pacific nations aimed at strengthening their economies as he warns Americans worried about high inflation that it is “going to be a haul” before they feel relief. The president says he does not believe an economic recession is inevitable in the U.S. Biden spoke at a news conference in Toyko after holding talks with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. He acknowledged the U.S. economy has “problems” but said they were “less consequential than the rest of the world has.” He added: “This is going to be a haul. This is going to take some time.”

Zelenskyy urges ‘maximum’ sanctions on Russia in Davos talk

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is calling for “maximum” sanctions against Russia during a virtual speech at the World Economic Forum gathering in Davos, Switzerland. He said Monday that sanctions need to go further to stop Russia’s aggression, including an oil embargo, blocking all of its banks and cutting off trade with Russia completely. Zelenskyy also says Ukraine needs at least $5 billion per month. He said tens of thousands of lives could have been saved if Ukraine had “received 100% of our needs at once, back in February” in terms of weapons, funding, political support and sanctions against Russia.

Massive Drug and Weapon Bust in Ambridge

(Ambridge, PA)  Ambridge Borough Police released information on a drug bust that occurred Friday via their Facebook page.  The department received a call Friday regarding an unwanted subject in an apartment and through further investigation it was found that the subject had warrants.  Police observed firearms in plain view and proceeded to secure the apartment and obtain a search warrant.  With the assistance of K9 Ryker, police found large amounts of drugs, guns, and currency.  Drugs seized include 948 grams of fentanyl, 825 grams of cocaine, 347 grams of heroin, and 63 grams of marijuana.  An AR-15, AK-47, Mac-10, two 9mm pistols, over 19,000 empty stamp bags, and $22,850 were also seized.  A male and female were taken into custody and placed in the Beaver County Jail.

Mailbox Hit and Run in Slippery Rock Twp.

(Slippery Rock Twp.)  State Police in New Castle are reporting an accident that involved an unknown vehicle in Slippery Rock Township. The vehicle struck and destroyed a mailbox in the area of 4132 Ellwood Road(PA-65) and fled the scene. The suspected vehicle is a 2010-2017 GMC Terrain SUV of an unknown color. Anyone with information on this hit and run incident is asked to call 724-591-2211.

Pennsylvania jobless rate fell; payrolls, labor force up

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s payrolls and workforce grew in April as the state’s unemployment rate sank to a post-pandemic low. That’s according to new state figures released Friday that show Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.8% from March’s rate. The national rate was 3.6% in April. In a survey of households, the labor force grew by 23,000 to pass 6.4 million, but still remains below 2008′s levels. In a separate survey of employers, non-farm payrolls in Pennsylvania grew in April by 11,400. At just above 5.9 million, payrolls are at their highest point since hitting a record high of 6.1 million just before the pandemic.

Triple Shooting in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities say three teenagers are in stable condition after a triple shooting in Pennsylvania in which another teen is being sought. Police said the 14-year-old boy and two 14-year-old girls were shot shortly after 9:30 p.m. Saturday during a festival at popular Penn’s Landing, a stretch of waterfront parks and eateries along the Delaware River in Philadelphia. The boy, who was shot in the right ribs, and the two girls, both shot in the foot, were all reported in stable condition Sunday at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Police said that the shooter was a 14-to-15-year-old male and that the gunfire followed an argument.

Vehicle Hit by Train in New Galilee

(New, Galilee, PA)  A vehicle was hit by a train in New Galilee Sunday morning around 2:30 AM. The accident occurred at the Centennial Avenue railroad crossing and a man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital from the scene. The vehicle was reported to have ended up on its roof. There is currently no word on the condition of the man or how the crash happened.

Former state AG due in court for alleged probation violation

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A former Pennsylvania attorney general who served jail time for leaking grand jury material and lying about it is due in court Monday on an alleged probation violation. Kathleen Kane was charged with drunken driving in March following a crash in Scranton. The arrest prompted a Montgomery County judge to issue a bench warrant for Kane, who remains on probation from a 2016 conviction for perjury, obstruction and other counts. Kane served eight months in jail for leaking grand jury material to embarrass a rival prosecutor. Kane was the first woman and first Democrat to be elected attorney general.
