(Pitttsburgh, PA) The National Weather Service’s Pittsburgh office broke a record for tornadoes in a year yesterday after a second EF-0 tornado that came from the storms on Sunday was confirmed.

An EF-0 tornado occurred in the Hookstown area on Sunday and the NWS confirmed that another EF-0 tornado occurred in the Orchard Hills area of Armstrong County.

The Armstrong County tornado, which had winds of 85 mph, brought the record to 30 for 2026 seen by the NWS Pittsburgh office.

That tornado pushes the county warning area of that office past the previous record of 29, which was set in 2024.

These two tornadoes bring the Pittsburgh area’s total to 24, excluding West Virginia and Ohio.

Tornadoes are most active in western Pennsylvania in the months of June and July, and even though chances for tornadoes in the region begin to decrease in the month in August, these storms showed that they are still possible to occur.
