(Harrisburg, PA) According to a release from Governor Josh Shapiro’s office, leading up to the 25th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City in 2026, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has directed the Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to work with local governments to designate on-road and off-road segments as part of the 9/11 National Memorial Trail linking the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the Flight 93 Memorial in Somerset County. 25 Pennsylvania counties and 129 municipalities is where the 9/11 National Memorial Trail passes through. According to Governor Shapiro, “Pennsylvania is proud to honor the heroes who ran towards danger to keep Americans safe and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001. The 9/11 National Memorial Trail provides a meaningful way for communities across our Commonwealth to connect, reflect, and pay tribute. By completing this trail, we ensure that residents and visitors alike can walk, bike, and explore while remembering the courage, sacrifice, and resilience that defines our nation.”

The September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance will work with PennDOT to identify locations for nearly 750 signs to aid navigation along roughly 900 miles of trail in Pennsylvania to honor both the heroes and events of September 11th, 2001. The signs that are provided and installed by the  September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance range from 18×12 to 24×18 inches depending on their locations and will feature the National Memorial Trail logo, a bicycle symbol, and “9-11 NMT.” Signage plans for several counties in Pennsylvania has been approved by PennDOT, who is developing plans actively for the on-road sections remaining across state-owned roadways.

This work to complete the 9/11 National Memorial Trail is supported by the Shapiro Administration so that the signage along the full length of this trail in Pennsylvania is done ahead of the 25th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York, and that 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks will occur on September 11th, 2026.
