Gino “Pig Iron” DiNardo (1931-2025)

Gino DiNardo, 93, of West Aliquippa, affectionately known as ”Pig Iron” and “Unk,” passed away on March 13th, 2025.

He was born on July 4th, 1931, a son of the late Giovanni and Antoiniella (DiPietriantonio) DiNardo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Philomena DiNardo and Helen D. Sildra, two brothers, Constantine “Stundy” DiNardo and Daniel DiNardo, two nephews, Michael DiNardo and Daniel DiNardo and his beloved dog, Snowball.
He was a member of St. Titus Church of Aliquippa.
Gino served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a clarinet player in the band. Upon his discharge from the Army, he gained employment at J&L Steelworks as a pipefitter and retired after 50 years of service.
“Unk” was fond of gardening and maintained the tradition inherited from his father of replanting garlic and sharing it with his family and friends.

He is survived by his youngest sister, Yolanda D. Lucci, who wrote this wonderful memory about her brother. When Gino was a small boy, he had a small red wagon. He would walk around and pick up pieces of Pig Iron that fell from J&L trucks. These pieces he would sell back to J&L for a few pennies. Consequently, his friends nicknamed him Pig Iron. The name stayed with him all of his life.

Gino valued time with his family, including his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who survive him: Valerie Waldroff, Toni Ann (Steve) Turkall, Danielle (Danny) Bozic, Della Marie (Terry) Zona, Dr. John Alan Lucci, Dr. Edward B. Lucci, Joseph G. Lucci, John DiNardo and Nick DiNardo, as well as a great nephew and great niece, Ryan and Justine Turkall, who “Unk” enjoyed spending time with, including numerous other special great nieces and great nephews. Gino also had many special friends in “West” throughout his lifetime.

The family expresses their gratitude to the health care professionals who provided care to Gino over the years. These include retired podiatrist and dear friends: Dr. Albert Nalli and Barbara Nalli, Dr. Scholleart, Nick Pertile CRNP, Dr. Sandhu, staff at Concordia Villa St. Joseph, Dr. Saleem and nurses August and Janine at Heritage Valley Beaver.

Visitation will be on Monday, March 17th from 5-7 p.m. in the funeral home. Departing prayers will begin on Tuesday. March 18th at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Titus Church, 952 Franklin Avenue, Aliquippa. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery and The Beaver County Special Unit will attend to present military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made if desired in memory of Gino to the Beaver County Humane Society or the Heart and Lung Association.
