Researchers found PFAs at detectable levels in surface water in Moffett Mill Run, which is located in Center Township where the stream runs into Raccoon Creek. Moffett Mill Run is located in the area of the Gateway Rehabilitation Center. Samples of the raw, untreated surface water were sampled.

The study underscores the need to update treatment in public drinking water. The PFAs are a group of more than 12,000 synthetic chemicals found in a variety of commonly used items such as the linings of fast food take out boxes and non-stick cookware The stream sampling revealed 10 parts per trillion of the PFA’s.

The results of the surface water testing were revealed on August 29, 2023, and the U.S. Geological Survey group partnered with the PA DEP and  the PA Water Science Center.
