PITTSBURGH (AP) — Outfielder Tommy Pham joined his 10th major league team, agreeing to a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates worth $4,025,000. The deal is pending Pham, who turns 37 next month, passing a physical. The signing is the most notable free agent acquisition by the Pirates, who have been relatively quiet during the offseason. Pittsburgh re-signed designated hitter Andrew McCutchen in December and signed second baseman/outfielder Adam Frazier in late January. The well-traveled Pham gives the Pirates another potential option to join Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz in the outfield. Pittsburgh is Pham’s 10th stop during his 11-year career.

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is being evaluated for an upper-body injury. Crosby was held out of practice after colliding with New Jersey’s Luke Hughes and Erik Haula in the third period of a 3-2 shootout loss to the Devils. Crosby skated to the bench favoring his left arm/hand but returned after being examined in the locker room. Crosby said afterward he got “tangled up” and did not offer specifics of the injury. The 37-year-old Crosby is scheduled to serve as captain for Team Canada in the 4 Nations Faceoff later this month.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Timo Meier beat Alex Nedeljkovic in the seventh round of a shootout to lift the New Jersey Devils past the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2. Jack Hughes scored twice for the Devils. Nico Daws stopped 25 shots in overtime and regulation then turned away five of the seven Penguins he faced in the shootout as the Devils won for the sixth straight time in Pittsburgh. Rickard Rakell scored his 24th of the season for Pittsburgh and Kevin Hayes tied it with 12:07 to go in regulation

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will attend the Super Bowl in New Orleans. Trump’s planned appearance at Sunday’s game was confirmed by a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly about the president’s plans and spoke on condition of anonymity. Trump is also scheduled to sit for an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier as part of the network’s pre-show programming, which is set to be taped from Florida before the game. Trump has not said outright whether he’s supporting the Kansas City Chiefs or the Philadelphia Eagles, but he posted congratulations to the Chiefs after their AFC Championship win last month.

NEW YORK (AP) — Fay Vincent, who became baseball commissioner in 1989 and then was forced out three years later by owners intent on a labor confrontation with players, has died. He was 86. Vincent had undergone radiation and chemotherapy for bladder cancer and developed complications, according to his wife, Christina. He asked that treatment be stopped and died Saturday at a hospital in Vero Beach, Florida. As baseball commissioner, Vincent angered owners by becoming the first management official to admit the collusion among teams against free agents following the 1985, ‘86 and ’87 seasons. He suspended the Yankees’ George Steinbrenner, divided expansion fees among both leagues, attempted to force National League realignment and negotiated a settlement that ended a 1990 spring training lockout.

FAIRBORN, Ohio (AP) — Led by Brandon Noel’s 17 points, the Wright State Raiders defeated the Robert Morris Colonials 66-64. The Raiders trailed for the last 14 1/2 minutes of the game until Andrew Welage hit the go-ahead jumper for a 65-64 lead with 11 seconds remaining. The Raiders are now 12-12 on the season, while the Colonials moved to 16-8.

Diggins scores 32 as UMass downs Duquesne 62-53

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rahsool Diggins’ 32 points led UMass over Duquesne 62-53 on Saturday.
Diggins shot 11 of 18 from the field, including 5 for 9 from 3-point range, and went 5 for 6 from the line for the Minutemen (10-12, 5-4 Atlantic 10 Conference). Daniel Hankins-Sanford added 12 points while going 6 of 12 from the field and also had 12 rebounds and three steals.
The Dukes (9-13, 4-5) were led by Tre Dinkins, who posted 11 points, five assists and two steals. Duquesne also got 10 points from Cam Crawford

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby scored in his fourth straight game, Alex Nedeljkovic made 25 saves for his first shutout of the season and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Nashville Predators 3-0 on Saturday night. Crosby, the captain of Canada in the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off, added an assist for his 484th multi-point game. Only six players in NHL history have more multi-point games. Nedeljkovic had his ninth NHL shutout. Bryan Rust scored an empty-net goal for his sixth 20-goal season, and Philip Tomasino scored against his former team. Pittsburgh acquired Tomasino in a trade with Nashville on Nov. 25. Erik Karlsson, an alternate captain for Sweden, had two assists. He reached 30 assists for the 12th time in his career, most among active defensemen.
