MAC & Parkway Races Take Center Stage In Week 7 High School Football Coverage On Beaver County Radio

With teams being three games away from the postseason, the Friday night lights will shine brightest on those who showcase the hardest, fullest, and most consistent efforts on the high school gridirons.

New Brighton (0-7) will seek its first win of the season as they welcome Western Beaver (6-1) for Class 2A Midwestern Conference action on 99.3 FM, 1230 WBVP, BCR Video Platforms and the Trib Live High School Sports Network. The Lions are coming off an 18-13 nailbiter loss to Ellwood City last week, while the Golden Beavers look to make it four in a row after last week’s 49-21 defeat of Riverside. Mike Azadian and John Perrotto have the call from Oak Hill Field beginning with pregame at 6:30 PM and kickoff slated for 7:00 PM.

On 95.7 FM and 1460 WMBA tonight–along with the Trib Live High School Sports Network–Central Valley (7-0) looks to continue their undefeated streak as they travel to Ambridge (1-6) in Class 4A Parkway action. The Bridgers were on the losing end of a shutout in Week 6, falling 40-0 to West Allegheny. Conversely, the Warriors were the architects of a shutout–their third consecutive–with a 43-0 win at Montour. Rob Matzie and Bruce Frey have the call from Moe Rubenstein Stadium with pregame at 6:30 PM and kickoff slated for 7:00 PM.

Crosby Starts 18th Season With A Bang, Pens Top Coyotes 6-2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang started their 17th season together with a bang as the Pittsburgh Penguins raced by the Arizona Coyotes 6-2. The longtime franchise cornerstones combined for two goals and four assists. The trio joined former New York Yankee stars Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada as the longest-tenured teammates in major North American professional sports history. Jake Guentzel, Jason Zucker, Bryan Rust and Kasperi Kapanen also scored for Pittsburgh. Nick Ritchie scored twice for the rebuilding Coyotes.

Phil Bourque Previews Penguins’ Season Opener On A.M. Beaver County

“This team is built to win right now.”

That “team” is the Pittsburgh Penguins, who open their 2022-23 regular season against the Arizona Coyotes at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday night. The Penguins Penguins Radio network color analyst Phil Bourque joined Matt Drzik on the morning of the game (October 13) to discuss the upcoming season for the Penguins, who signed Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang to extended contracts during the past offseason.

“They need to pay ownership and management back for bringing the team back together again,” Bourque said, “Because a lot of people thought ‘There’s no way we can bring Tanger AND Geno back’, and they found a way to do that.” The return of Malkin and Letang with Penguins captain Sidney Crosby marks the 17th consecutive season of the trio playing together–tying the North American sports record.

Penguins management added several new faces to the lineup in the offseason, including Ty Smith, Jan Rutta, and Ryan Poehling…but the one new face that Bourque sees having the biggest impact is defenseman Jeff Petry. “Jeff Petry is a guy that I think will lighten the load for Kris Letang, as far as what’s expected for a defenseman for driving some offense,” Bourque stated. “The one thing we were kinda lacking was jam, some toughness on the backside. That’s why I think they moved Mike Matheson and John Marino, and brought in Jan Rutta and also Jeff Petry.”

As far as the matchup against the Coyotes, Bourque favors the Penguins on paper, but the Stanley Cup Champion knows the dangers of overlooking an opponent: “If you’re peeking a little bit towards your next opponent, which is against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night, you’re gonna get punched in the nose in your home opener against Arizona.” Bourque suggests that in order for the Penguins to win tonight, is to “have a great start, get the fans into it, get the lead, and then just pile on.”

Brady’s Run Officially Re-Opens Outdoor Basketball & Tennis Courts, Pickleball Courts Added To Complex

After years of planning and months of work, the chance for Beaver County citizens to play outside has returned.

Dozens gathered just off of Route 51 in Fallston to the newly renovated tennis courts and basketball courts at Brady’s Run Park, with new pickleball courts being added to the complex. The courts had been under construction since May, but the planning–according to Parks & Recreation director Tony Caltury–has been in the works for several years. The surfaces were renovated and repainted, with the play areas colored in shades of blue to differentiate from the green “out of bounds” area.

“This project has been a labor of love for multiple years,” Caltury reiterated to the crowd. “We’re so excited to bring this park upgrade to Beaver County, and to our park system as a whole, but it couldn’t be done without the support and drive of some of you individuals.” Two of those individuals–Commissioners Tony Amadio and Jack Manning–also spoke at the grand (re)opening ceremony, expressing their gratitude towards the project finally coming to fruition.

“Coming out of the pandemic,” Manning stated, “It emphasized how much recreation, the outdoors, and the walking park, the value of the assets we have here in Beaver County with all of our parks…and I can tell you as a board, we’re committed to investing as much as we possibly can.”

The parks will be open from 8 AM to dusk, as declassified by Caltury during his appearance on A.M. Beaver County earlier in the day (seen above). Access to the courts is encouraged through using the back side of the Ice Arena parking lot and taking the creek bridge to the parks (as opposed to parking in the smaller lot off of Route 51). Those in attendance came with their gear, and started playing their sport of choice (except for deck hockey, that will be renovated over the next several weeks) and enjoying the dry, overcast Beaver County day.

Bob and John will also preview the games that Beaver County Radio will be carrying on Friday night this week.
