Beaver Bobcats Claw Out First Round Win Over Freeport In Girls 4A

The Beaver Bobcats hosted Freeport Tuesday night in girls 4A and had no trouble beating a Freeport team that could not get any offense going on against a good lady Bobcat effort that Freeport could not score on or stop. Beaver led by as much as 17 a couple times in the game and shot decent hitting some 3s and playing hard under the boards.  Beaver will get a test in its next game against Elizabeth Forward who beat Central valley tonight.

Aliquippa Beats Waynesburg Central 71-41

Aliquippa will proceed to the next round of playoffs after their win over Waynesburg Central tonight.  Aliquippa broke out from the beginning, proving to be a challenge for Waynesburg.  Waynesburg struggled to get enough points on the board to approach the Quips lead.  Ultimately, Aliquippa protected their lead and ended the game victorious with the final score being Aliquippa 71 Waynesburg Central 41.

Cindric Wins Daytona 500 to Celebrate Penske’s 85th Birthday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Austin Cindric drove his brand new NASCAR ride to victory in the Daytona 500 on team owner Roger Penske’s 85th birthday. Cindric drove a masterful race at Daytona International Speedway as the Ford drivers synched on strategy all week and executed their plan to perfection Sunday night. The blue oval drivers pushed each other over 500 miles and were bunched together for the final restart in overtime. Cindric got aid from Team Penske teammate Ryan Blaney and held off Bubba Wallace for the win. Ford had seven drivers finish in the top 10.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jesper Fast scored 9 seconds into the third period to break a tie, Sebastian Aho followed with his 22nd goal of the season and the Carolina Hurricanes edged the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Sunday to move into first place in the Metropolitan Division. Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordan Staal also scored for Carolina, which never trailed in the first meeting of the season between the teams that entered the day tied atop perhaps the league’s most competitive division. Sidney Crosby, Bryan Rust and Evan Rodrigues scored for Pittsburgh.

Central Valley falls to North Catholic 57-42

In a tough playoff matchup that started off as a close game, both teams knew only one team would advance to the next round.  North Catholic played strong from the start scoring points and holding the Warriors back.  Central Valley wasn’t able to turn around the score in their favor and trailed North Catholic throughout the game.  North Catholic advances to the next round with a final score North Catholic 57 Central Valley 42.

Bob Barrickman Previews The WPIAL Basketball Playoffs

21 local teams. Six classifications. One goal.

February 18 marks the beginning of the 2022 WPIAL Basketball Playoffs, and Beaver County Radio sports director Bob Barrickman joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to discuss the contenders, dark horses, and teams vying for a chance to hoist District 7 gold at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh.

Six teams in the valley have earned #1 seeds–the OLSH boys and girls in Class 2A, the Rochester girls in Class 1A, the Blackhawk girls in Class 4A, the Ellwood City boys in Class 3A, and the Quaker Valley boys in Class 4A. (A full list of local teams and games can be seen here.) Beaver County Radio’s coverage of the playoffs begins Friday night with a matchup in the Class 4A Boys’ bracket, as #13 Central Valley battles #4 North Catholic. Pregame from Cranberry is 6:30, and tip-off will be at 7:00.
