Joe Namath Mural Officially Revealed At Larry Bruno Athletic Complex

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

“I know Western PA. I know Beaver Falls is my home, man.”

Those words, spoken by Beaver Falls High School graduate Joe Namath, reflected the homecoming atmosphere that took hold at the Larry Bruno Athletic Complex on Thursday, September 15. The Pro Football Hall Of Fame quarterback for the New York Jets and the University Of Alabama had a life-size mural of his likeness revealed in his honor at the Joe Namath Practice Field behind the Beaver Falls Middle School. The mural was designed by artist Mike Sullivan as part of the Pittsburgh Legends Mural Series, and was presented to the high school on behalf of the Legacy Art Foundation and PPG.

Beaver Falls Athletic Director Jim Carbone was the emcee for the evening’s ceremony, and was joined by guest speakers Cindy Cook (School Board President) and Judge Rick Mancini. The Tiger Cheerleaders and Tiger Marching Band gave performances for the crowd–including “Broadway Joe”–and the players and coaches of the varsity football team were also in attendance for the honoring of their school’s most famous gridiron general. Four of those players–seniors Trey Singleton, Connor Paolucci, Thomas Tutwiler, and Jaren Brickner–joined Namath’s lifelong friend Linwood Alford to unveil the mural to an adoring crowd.

Namath himself, along with his granddaughter Jemma, were live by video feed at the event. Joe expressed gratitude toward his hometown, and acknowledged the man who first taught him great wisdom in life and in football. “Larry Bruno was a great man and a great coach,” Namath stated. “He said, ‘It’s alright to dream about things. If you don’t dream about things, they may never happen. If you dream about them, you can make them happen.’ And then I started to dream.”

The WPIAL Champion, NCAA Champion, and Super Bowl Champion gave some sound advice to the team that played for his alma mater. “You got to convince yourself that you’re doing the right thing, giving every ounce of energy and effort to whatever you’re doing on the field and off the field; to whatever you’re doing productively. Don’t let people tell you that you can’t do something.”

Plus, he had one final command for the current Tigers, on the eve of their battle for the Little Brown Jug: “Beat New Brighton!”

Geno DeMarco Talks About The Legacy Of Former Geneva Football Coach Gene Sullivan

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

“It’s more than just football, it’s a preparation for life that continues on…and Coach Sullivan was a mentor to me.”

Geneva College has had two head football coaches since 1976. The current coach–Geno DeMarco, now in his 30th season–joined Matt Drzik on the September 14 edition of A.M. Beaver County to pay tribute to his predecessor, former head coach and Geneva athletic director Gene Sullivan. News of Sullivan’s passing was revealed on Friday.

DeMarco said that though Sullivan was a dedicated “student of the game”, he did not prioritize football for himself or his student athletes. “It was always the Lord first,” DeMarco said, “and it was our families second, it was what we were studying third, and then football fourth. He really lived out his life and those types of priorities.” Sullivan was DeMarco’s coach from 1981-83, and even after DeMarco took over as head coach in 1993, Sullivan still participated on the staff as an assistant until 2013.

“He was able to teach these kids how to become men up front,” DeMarco added, “and I saw a true football coach come out of him at that time. He was very intense with those guys.” Along having an intense desire and attention to detail for football, Coach Sullivan also made sure his players were able to care for each other. “In his first meeting, he’d tell all of us that he loved us and that we needed to tell each other that,” DeMarco recalled. “You just don’t picture that in a football team, but that’s who we are.”

Geneva has not yet announced formal plans to honor and recognize Sullivan, but DeMarco says discussions will take place. The weight room on the College Hill campus is named in Sullivan’s honor, but as Coach DeMarco said: “His mark has been left all over College Hill.”

Neshannock Narrowly Defeats Ambridge 40-34

In a highly competitive game with few errors from either team, Neshannock was able to stop Ambridge from scoring a last minute touchdown to secure the game. Both teams played an exceptional offense; but Neshannock’s playmaking ability gave them the edge tonight. With multiple plays netting them over 50 yards each, Neshannock takes the game with a score of 40-34.
