Mangino to Join Beaver County Radio. Sports Broadcast Teams Announced.

(Brighton Twp., Pa) Beaver County Radio is proud to announce that longtime veteran broadcaster Robert Mangino will be joining our high school football broadcast team this fall. Mangino will be the lead play by play man for Beaver County Radio’s Friday Night Game of the Week. He will be joined in the booth by longtime Beaver County Radio Broadcaster Bruce Frey who will be on color commentary. Beaver County Radio’s Mike Azadian will provide the sideline report.

Mangino has been a radio talk show host for 27 years. The last 13 years at KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh, Prior to that he hosted at 570 WKBN in Youngstown and 1200 WKST in New Castle.

General Manager Frank Sparks also announced changes to the remainder of the sports broadcast team. Saturday High School Football Broadcasts will be anchored by veteran broadcaster Mike Azadian. Geneva College Football game broadcasts will be anchored by Bruce Frey. Frey will be joined on color commentary by longtime time New Brighton AD Joe Ursida for home games and veteran national sports writer and longtime sports writer for the Beaver County Times John Perrotto will be on color commentary for the away games.  Azadian will also anchor the popular Coaches Corner show on Wednesdays at 7PM. Finally Frey will anchor the Falconi’s Moon Twp. Ford Wrap up Show on Friday nights after the game.

Sparks went on to say that “we have just been piecing things together since the untimely death of Beaver County Hall of Fame and Beaver County Radio Legendary Broadcaster Bob Barrickman.” “He went on to say that we really miss Bob and we could never replace him but we do need to move on while we continue to remember Bob’s legacy.” “It will be nice to have some stability in broadcast teams.”

Beaver County Radio will broadcast all games on 95.7 and 99.3 FM along with 1230 WBVP and 1460 WMBA. The games will be live audio streamed on our website at beavercountyradio.com and on the St. Barnabas Radio Network APP. The Friday Game of the week will be heard on all Beaver County Radio outlets and will be video streamed on our Facebook Page and You Tube Channel.

 

 

With 6 weeks until NHL training camps open, some teams may not be done making moves

Kyle Dubas doesn’t expect the Pittsburgh Penguins to make any more moves before the 2023-24 NHL season opens after completing the biggest trade of the summer. The Penguins dealt players and picks to two different teams to get three-time Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Erik Karlsson. But the rival Washington Capitals are among those still looking to wheel and deal in the six weeks left before training camps open. General manager Brian MacLellan says the Capitals are still looking for a top-six forward. Trading away Evgeny Kuznetsov remains a possibility.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. had three hits and Michael Harris II tagged on a popup to right field and scored on a close call in the eighth inning, lifting the Atlanta Braves to a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Harris raced home on Austin Riley’s fly into shallow right off Carmen Mlodzinski (2-3) that was fielded by backpeddling Jared Triolo. Harris slid in ahead of the throw to home by the second baseman. He was originally called out for possibly having left third before Triolo caught the ball, but the call was reversed following a review and the Braves moved ahead 6-5. Beaver County Radio to Make Announcement Concerning Football Broadcast Teams on Thursday

(Brighton Twp., Pa.) Beaver County Radio General Manager Frank Sparks is set to announce the new Beaver County Radio Broadcast Teams for both high school and Geneva College football this Thursday, August 10, 2023, at 11:35 AM during “Notes on Entertainment” with Eddy Crow and Scott Tady.

Sparks said that “we have just been piecing things together since the untimely death of Beaver County Hall of Fame and Beaver County Radio Legendary Broadcaster Bob Barrickman.” “He went on to say that we really miss Bob and we could never replace him but we do need to move on while we continue to remember Bob’s legacy”

Rodriguez, Joe slug homers to power Pirates past Brewers 4-1, spoiling Woodruff’s return

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Endy Rodriguez and Connor Joe homered to spoil the return of Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff after four months, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-1 victory over the NL Central-leading Brewers. Woodruff (1-1) was activated off the 60-day injured list (right shoulder inflammation) on Sunday and was making his first start for the Brewers since April 7. He retired the first six hitters, striking out the first five, before Rodriguez opened the third inning with his second homer. Joe opened the fourth with his eighth homer of the season to make it 2-0. Bryan Reynolds had a pinch-hit, two-run homer, his 14th of the season, off Abner Uribe in the eighth to make it 4-0. Milwaukee scored an unearned run in the ninth.

Short ties career-high with 3 RBIs, helping Tigers split 2-game series with 6-3 win over Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Zack Short tied a career-high with three RBIs, powering the Detroit Tigers to a split of a two-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 6-3 victory. Pinch-hitting for Akil Baddoo, Short capped a three-run fourth inning with a two-run single off Ryan Borucki to left that extended the Tigers’ lead Wednesday to 4-1. His two-out RBI double, down the left-field line past a diving Ke’Bryan Hayes at third base, made it 5-2 in the sixth. Eduardo Rodriguez gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out five in six innings for Detroit, which had lost six of seven.

Liover Peugero’s Homer and Johan Oviedo’s Strong Pitching Lead Pirates over Tigers 4-1

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rookie Liover Peguero hit a two-run home run and Johan Oviedo pitched seven strong innings to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-1 victory over the slumping Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.

Peguero’s two-run home run to left-field bleachers capped a three-run second inning. The 3-0 lead was enough for Oviedo, who allowed one run while scattering six hits, striking out five and walking two.

Oviedo (5-11) has won back-to-back starts after losing eight consecutive decisions.

“Really big start,” Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said. “He threw 25 pitches in the first and bounced back and was really efficient after that. He was in command of his pitches the entire game. Really solid start.”

Rookie Endy Rodriguez tripled in a run in the second to open the scoring and scored on Peguero’s third home run in 10 games since being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.

“I’ve never been (in the major leagues) before so I feel the more reps I get, the better I’m going to get,” Peguero said. “I feel what’s giving me a rhythm right now is being patient at the plate, not trying to rush anything, just be fluid and try to put the best swing on every pitch.”

Another rookie, Alika Williams, had two hits for the Pirates. He doubled in a run in the fourth to push the lead to 4-0.

David Bednar pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 22nd save to close out the Pirates’ fourth win in five games. The Pittsburgh-area native had been the subject of trade rumors in recent weeks, but remained with the Pirates when baseball’s trade deadline passed Tuesday.

“Everybody knows how much I love it here and want to be here,” Bednar, a two-time All-Star said. “So, I’m happy.”

Matt Manning (3-3) remained winless in his last four starts. He gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings, struck out six and did not walk a batter.

“He made some mistakes and he paid for them,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. “They won some at-bats early on a couple of loose breaking balls and they did some damage. In a game where we didn’t generate much offensively that was the separator.”

Akil Baddoo hit an RBI single for the Tigers, who lost for the sixth time in seven games.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado, Juan Soto and Gary Sánchez homered to help the San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 on Tuesday night. Blake Snell (7-8) limited the Pirates to two hits and one run in six innings. Steven Wilson, Robert Suarez and Josh Hader pitched three innings of one-hit relief. Pirates starter Rich Hill (7-10) allowed seven hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Coming off a breakout season, outside linebacker Alex Highsmith has signed a new contract that will keep him with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the next five seasons.
The two sides announced the deal on Wednesday, a week before the Steelers reported to training camp. The 25-year-old Highsmith was in the final year of his rookie contract, and this will extend it through 2027.
“This means everything,” Highsmith said in a statement provided by the team after the signing. “I know I am a Pittsburgh Steeler through and through, and just to be a part of this amazing organization for four more years means the world to me, to my wife, to my whole family. This is where I want to be. This is where I want to play ball.”
A third-round pick in the 2020 draft, Highsmith has played in 49 career games, starting 38. He has 179 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 22 1/2 sacks, 41 quarterback hits, six forced fumbles, two passes defensed and one interception.
Highsmith ranks first in the NFL for the most strip sacks (five) and forced fumbles (six) and is tied for second most in sacks (17.5) in his last 20 games, dating to Week 16 of the 2021 season. He also has recorded seven multiple sack games in his career.
Highsmith led the team with a career-high 14.5 sacks last season. The total was tied for sixth-most in the league, and fifth-most in Steelers history for a single season.
“It was a good year, but I’m far from satisfied,” said Highsmith in the offseason. “I never get complacent or comfortable, but I am grateful for a better year and being injury free for a year. I never want to get complacent, but I always want to be grateful.”
In addition, Highsmith’s team-high five forced fumbles were also tied for most in the NFL last year. He finished the season with 63 tackles, 20 quarterback hits, 12 tackles for loss and one pass defensed.
“It gave me a lot of confidence,” he said. “In 2021, I didn’t have a good start to my year dealing with injuries. I ended up finishing the year strong. This past year, I just wanted to start fast and continue it throughout the year. I felt like I was playing with more consistency and more confidence because I know the type of player that I can be. I just want to continue to get better every year.”

Former Pitt Star Jordon Addison Pulled Over for Going 140 MPH Due to Dog Emergency

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings first-round draft pick Jordan Addison told the state trooper who clocked him going 140 mph in a 55 mph zone last week that he was speeding because of an emergency involving his dog.
The Associated Press on Monday obtained an updated copy of the citation issued to Addison and filed with the St. Paul city attorney.
The Minnesota State Patrol said Addison was pulled over without resistance in a Lamborghini Urus at 3:07 a.m. Thursday by a trooper who was also traveling eastbound on Interstate 94 in St. Paul about a mile outside of downtown.
According to the citation, Addison said he was speeding because his dog was having an emergency at his residence. The nature of the emergency was not disclosed.
Addison said in a statement he made a mistake and used poor judgment. “I recognize and own that,” he said. “I am going to learn from this and not repeat the behavior. I am truly sorry.”
Addison was selected out of Southern California with the 23rd overall pick in the NFL draft, following the cost-cutting move to release veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen.
The 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner for the nation’s top wide receiver at Pittsburgh, Addison transferred to USC for his final college season. He had 59 catches for 875 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022 for the Trojans. In two years with the Panthers, Addison had 2,259 receiving yards.
ESPN first reported Addison’s stated reason for speeding.
