01/30/16 Saturday Sports Slam Preview

This week’s guests are Tim Ishman Director of Recreation and Tourism for Beaver County in the 8 o’clock hour ( We’re going to talk with him about the Ice Arena and Snow Shovel riding contest along with other things going on in the county  and Mike Lysakowski from Motorsport Aspects in the 9 o’clock hour. (Mike is getting ready to leave for a speed week’s in Daytona and we’ll check in with him with all the new rule changes in Nascar) Plus it’s the break in the NHL we’ll evaluate the Pens first half and high school hoops are starting to wind down we’ll go over the standings and see who has to beat who to get to the playoffs all that and more with Frank Sparks and Greg Benedetti this Saturday on the Saturday Sports Slam from 8:05 to 10 a.m. on Beaver County Radio 1230/WBVP and 1460 WMBA.

Pirates May Have A Block

The  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the the Brewers posted   an opening for a play-by-play announcer on their web site.  The reason is their current play-by-play man Joe Block is a finalist for the same job with  the Pirates.  That job became available when Tim Neverett moved home to take the job with the Boston Red Soxs.

 

Rowan and N C State Bury Panthers

Former Lincoln Park star Maverick  Rowan scored  14 points as North Carolina State buried the Pitt Panthers  78-61 at the Peterson Event Center Tuesday night. The Wolfpack was lead by point guard Anthony “Cat”  Barber who scored 31 points and eight assists in the rout.  They lead by as much as 28-points in the first half and fought off two attempts by the Panthers to get back in the game.  The Panthers were lead by  Jamar Artis’s 16-points.  Pitt travels to  Florida State for a Saturday afternoon game.

Former Kicker And Defensive End Dies

Lou Michaeles a former kicker and defensive end with the Steelers from 1961-1963, has died.  He was 80-years-old.  A 1960 4th Round draft pick played his first three years with the L A Rams before being traded to the Steelers. He also played for Baltimore and Green Bay before retiring in 1971

No Surgery For Big Ben

On his radio show Tuesday, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger revealed that the bruised AC joint and injured ligaments in his throwing shoulder  will not need surgery.   He has been advised by the Steelers medical staff to rest the arm and it will heal on it’s own.

Stewart Gets Two Years

The Pirates and back up catcher Chris Stewart have agreed to a three million two year deal with a club option for a third.  Stewart will earn 1.35 million in  2016, 1.4 million in 2017.  The club option  for 2018 is 1.5 million with a team  buy out of 200-thousand.  Stewart’s deal comes less than a week after the Pirates  avoided arbitration with starting catcher Francisco Cervelli.  Cervelli will  make 3.5 million in 2016.

 

Rowan In Pittsburgh Causes A Postponement

With former teammate Maverick Rowan and NC State  in town to play Pitt, Lincoln Park has postponed it’s game with Shenango tonight.  The game has been moved to Wednesday night at the Midland Gym. Tip off will be 7:30.  Tonight’s games have  Blackhawk at Beaver Falls.  WBVP air time is 7:05.  Beaver will be at Hopewell. WMBA air time is 7:05

Pitt Welcomes Rowan.

The 15-2  Pitt Panthers host the 10-8 North Carolina State Wolfpack at the Peterson Event Center tonight.  With their lost Saturday to Louisville, the Panthers fell off the AP Poll but, remains number 20 in the USA Today coaches poll. the Panthers are 4-1 in the ACC. NC State is 0-5.  The game is the return of Maverick Rowan.  Rowan lead the Lincoln Park Leopards to the 2014 WPIAL-PIAA Titles. He was also the PIAA player of the year 2014.  The 19-year-old freshman  is averaging 13.3 points per game for the Wolfpack.
