Former Steeler Is Now A Jet

The New York Jets have signed  former Steelers running back, kick returner and sometimes wide receiver Dri Archer to a reserve/future contract .  Archer was a  third round draft pick by the Steelers out of Kent State in 2014.  The Black and Gold released Archer last November

Calabria To Join State Hall Of Fame

Former Blackhawk Cougar and  North Carolina Tarhill  Dante Calabria will be inducted into the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall Of Fame on April 23rd.  Calabria, who is already in the Beaver County Sports Hall Of Fame, is one of 12 inductees in the Class 2016.  Others include WPIAL  Executive Director Tim O’Malley,  former Steelers cornerback  and four time Super Bowl winner  J T Thomas, and longtime Pittsburgh Post Gazette High School Reporter Mike  White.  The banquet will be at the Sheraton Hotel Station Square.

Sid’s Three Comes Naturally

Sidney Crosby registered his first natural hat trick in more than five years to lead the Penguins to their fourth straight win 6-5 over the Ottawa Senators. Crosby has reached  the 20-goal mark on the strength of a goal in each of his last eight home games.The Penguins will in Florida for the weekend.  They will be at Tampa Bay Friday Night. Saturday night they will play the Florida Panthers.  The Pens and Panthers on WBVP-WMBA  pregame show is 7pm.

It Rains Threes

They may have been on the losing end of their games, but two Beaver County High Schools players had outstanding games.  Blackhawk beat Beaver 72-61 however,  Beaver’s Dante Anzevino drained six threes.  New Brighton’s Ronald Debo  had five threes in a 89-69 loss to  Summit Academy.

 

Stabler Had Brain Injury

Researchers at Boston University say former Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler had the brain disease CTE. Stabler died of Colon Cancer at the age of 69 in July.  The New York Times reports that Stabler had high Stage 3 CTE.  CTE has been found in the brains of dozens of former football players

Roger Federe Sidlined

Tennis star Roger Federer has had knee surgery.  The 34-year-old listed the surgery on his web site.  The statement didn’t say which knee was involved in the procedure. It was a success and was done Friday.  That was the day after his lost to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open Semi Final.

Fuyrk Faces Surgery

Former U S Open Champion Jim Furyk will miss about three months on the tour. He will have surgery on a troublesome wrist.  The wrist has not healed. It has sidelined Fuyrk since mid September.

College Signing Date Is Almost Here

It’s rug cutting time for high school football player and college coaches. National signing day is tomorrow.  Players who have made verbal commitments make  it offical.  Of the 26 senior players in Beaver County,  six have yet to decide.  Former Riverside QB  Jason Danback will sign with Gannon an NCAA Divison II school.  Yet to make a commitment is former Central Valley QB Chris Callaghan.  He has Tifin,  Clariton, and Edinboro on his list.

Pitt Falls From The Poll

If you are looking for the Pitt Mens Basketball team In the USA Today-Coaches Poll, they are not there. Their lost to Clemson knocked them off the poll. The Panthers join fellow ACC team Duke.  The Blue Devils are 1-5 in their last six games.  Pitt faces #9 Virginia Saturday at Noon at the Peterson Event Center.

Penguins Begin Second Half

The Penguins ended their all star vacation on Monday.  They held practice at the Cranberry facility. Missing from the workout were the All Star participants Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang were excused because of the game on Sunday. Left wing Chris Kunitz practiced and will be a game time decision. Kunitz was injured in the January 24th game against the Washington Capitols.  Penguins host the Ottawa Senators tonight at the Consol Energy Center.  Face off is shortly after 7pm.  WBVP-and-WMBA’s next broadcast game will be Saturday in Tampa Bay against the Lightning.
