JONES SIGN WITH ARIZONA

FORMER STEELERS LINEBACKER JARVIS JONES IS NOW A ARIZONA CARDINAL.  HE WAS A STEELERS FIRST ROUND PICK IN 2013 OUT OF GEORGIA. HE NEVER LIVED UP TO HIS POTENTIAL. IN FOUR SEASONS, HE PLAYED IN 50 GAMES.  35 WAS AS A STARTER. HE HAD 125-TACKLES, SIX SACKS, TWO INTERCEPTINS, FOUR FORCED FUMBLES AND THREE FUMBLE RECOVERIES.  THERE IS HAPPY NEWS IN STEELERS NATION.   IT’S MIKE TOMLIN’S 45TH BIRTHDAY.

PENGUINS PLAY THE FLYERS

THE EIGHT DAY FIVE GAME ROAD TRIP FOR THE PENGUINS  ENDS TONIGHT IN PHILADELPHIA.   THE PENS HAVE ACCUMULIATED SEVEN OF EIGHT POINTS SO FAR. THE ONLY BLEMISH WAS A SHOOT OUT LOSS TO CALGARY MONDAY NIGHT.  THE PENS ARE BACK IN SECOND PLACE. WASHINGTON’S ALEX OVECHKIN BROKE A 10-GAME SCORELESS STREAK WITH A GOAL IN THE CAPITALS 4-2 WIN OVER MINNESOTA. THE CAPITALS LEAD THE EASTERN CONFERENCE WITH 97 POINTS. THE PENGUINS HAVE 95.  THE PENGUINS AND FLYERS FROM THE WELLS FARGO CENTER 7pm ON WBVP-WMBA.

 

PIAA RESUMES….

WEATHER HAS REEKED HAVOC ON THE PIAA PLAYOFFS IN BASKETBALL, SWIMMING AND BASKETBALL.  THE BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS RESUME THURSDAY.  WBVP-WMBA  WILL HAVE TWO GAMES ON THE AIR.  THE BLACKHAWK GIRLS WILL FACE THE VILLA MARIA GIRLS.  AIR TIME IS 4:30.  AT 7:30 THE BEAVER FALLS  BOYS WILL FACE THE ERIE STRONG VINCENT BOYS.  BOTH GAMES WILL BE AT SHARON HIGH SCHOOL

Blackhawk Girls, Lincoln Park Boys Advance In PIAA Playoffs

The Lincoln Park Boys and Blackhawk Girls advanced to the second round of the PIAA playoffs at Fox Chapel HS on Beaver County Radio Friday Night.

The Lady Cougars advanced with a 53-32 victory over the Freeport Lady Yellowjackets in the 4A Girls’ bracket. Freeport went on an 11-0 run to begin the second half, but the Cougars responded to finish off the Yellowjackets for the second time this postseason.

Blackhawk will now play Villa Maria in the second round. Mady Aulbach (Blackhawk) and Kim Mixon (Freeport) were selected as the CCBC Players of The Game.

Meanwhile Lincoln Park overcame an early battle to wear out Juniata and win going away by a score of 70-39. Nelly Cummings shot a 3-pointer early in the 4th to surpass Brandon Fuss-Cheatham as the leading scorer in Beaver County history.

The Leopards’ Tom Melanja and the Indians’ Ben Lauver were selected as the CCBC Players of The Game.

Central Valley Hockey Wins First Playoff Game

Despite two early goals within a minute, the Central Valley Warriors came back to earn their first PIHL playoff victory with a 5-4 victory over Elizabeth Forward Tuesday night at the Beaver County Ice Arena.

Captain Cameron Drake had a hat trick within the first 40 minutes of play, and freshman Anthony Santilli scored the eventual game-winner in the 3rd to seal the victory. The Warriors (13-7-1) now move to the semifinals to play #2 Carrick (17-4-0) next Tuesday at the Alpha Ice Complex in Pittsburgh; game time is 9:00 pm.

Keselowski wins in Atlanta

Brad Keselowski overcame a loose wheel issue and held off Kyle Larson late for the victory in the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 on Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway in the second race of the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.

Keselowski passed Larson with seven laps to go and held off the hard-charging  Larson for the win. The win is Keselowski’s first at Atlanta and the 22nd of his career. The Team Penske driver led 21 laps on the day.
The dominance of Harvick was the story for much of the day as he led 292 of the first 311 laps of the 325-lap race. He won both stages and earned two playoff bonus points.

Keselowski has now clinched his spot in this years chase , NASCAR’s version of the play-offs later this year. The victory also gave Keselowski five bonus points in the chase.

“Coach U.” Joins Saturday Sports Slam.

(Beaver County. PA) The discussion was lively on Saturday March 4, 2017 as New Brighton Athletic Director, Joe Ursida, or “Coach U.” as he is affectionately known, offered his thoughts on a wide range of subjects as a special guest on the weekly Saturday Sports Slam talk show.  Ursida discussed the the pros and cons of the W.P.I.A.L. re-alignment to six classifications, the struggle to recruit new referees and umpires for high school sports, and offered his thoughts on the upcoming Pirates season, among other things.

Also joining the show on Saturday was WBVP-WMBA staffer and Penn State Beaver Senior, Zach Ulrich.

The Saturday Sports Slam is hosted by Greg Benedetti and Frank Sparks and can be heard from 8 A.M. to 10 A.M. every Saturday on 1230 WBVP and 1460 WMBA.

 

5A Boys’ WPIAL Final: Moon 69, Hampton 62

The Moon Tigers earn the inaugaural 5A Boys’ Championship in WPIAL Basketball, winning 69-62 over section foe Hampton at the Petersen Events Center on Beaver County Radio.

Moon’s win was the fourth WPIAL title for the school district in boys’ basketball, and its first since 2006.

The Tigers will now try to double their gold in the PIAA Playoffs, and their journey begins against Franklin Regional. The Talbots will have a re-match with Mars in their PIAA first-round match.

Antonio Ionadi (Hampton) and Jarrod Simmons (Moon) were selected as the CCBC Players Of The Game.
