(Beaver County, PA) It certainly isn’t anything new to say that an Aliquippa head coach by the name of Mike will be a guest on “Coaches Corner”. Such was the case Wednesday evening, but it was not business as usual as new Aliquippa head football coach, Mike Warfield was the guest of honor at the weekly live sports talk show broadcast at the sports patio at Robert’s Roadside Inn. Warfield replaced another very familiar “Mike” recently, when he replaced long time coach of the Quips, Mike Zmijanac. Much like the first name, there are other similarities. Keeping in the Zmijanac winning tradition, Warfield’s team is off to a great start at 2-0 so far this year, racking up 103 points and his boys have yet to be scored upon. Warfield’s team should get a decent test this Friday when Quaker Valley comes calling to to Carl A. Aschman Stadium for a Friday Evening get together. The Quakers are also 2-0 and have yet to yield any scoring.
One of the reasons for Warfield’s popularity and success is his commitment to his players. Even last night, he arrived at the broadcast a few minutes late because he had to take a few of the Aliquippa players home after practice. Warfield still commands a great deal of respect and is an imposing figure of supreme athletic build, looking like he might be able to take the field again for the Quips, now in his late forties, where he starred at quarterback back in the 80’s.
The sports patio at Robert’s Roadside Inn continues to be the home for some great sports talk live on 1230 WBVP and 1460 WMBA, along with free pizza from Pizza Joe’s in Beaver and wings from Robert’s Roadside Inn.
Coaches Corner is hosted by Bob Barrickman, Tom Hays and Bruce Frey and airs every Wednesday from 7 to 8 P.M. on WBVP and WMBA
