PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew McCutchen isn’t going anywhere. The Pittsburgh Pirates star is remaining in his adopted hometown after agreeing to a one-year contract for the 2024 season worth $5 million, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because it was not yet finalized. The 37-year-old McCutchen hit .256 with 12 home runs and 43 RBIs in 112 games while serving primarily as a designated hitter in 2023. He collected his 2,000th career hit in June and was sitting on 299 career home runs in September when he partially tore his left Achilles tendon while legging out a double against Milwaukee.

Pirates Catcher Endy Rodríguez Will Miss 2024 Season after Undergoing Right Elbow Surgery

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Endy Rodríguez will miss the entire 2024 season after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his right elbow.

The team announced Rodríguez had surgery Tuesday after he was injured taking a swing while playing in the Dominican Republic. The estimated recovery time is 10-12 months.

The 23-year-old Rodríguez is considered a major part of the Pirates’ future after making his major league debut in July. He hit .220 with three home runs and 13 RBIs in 57 games.

Rodríguez is a work in progress as a receiver but did throw out nine of 30 potential base stealers.

The Pirates had expected Rodríguez to take on the bulk of the catching load in 2024. Now, they’ll likely turn to former top overall draft pick Henry Davis, Jason Delay and perhaps recently signed Ali Sanchez behind the plate.

Davis spent most of his 2023 rookie season playing right field. Sanchez signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh on Dec. 1.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers are reeling following two painful losses. Pittsburgh now sits at 7-6 after falling to lowly Arizona and New England in a span of five days. The Steelers never led against the Patriots while letting the NFL’s lowest-scoring offense score three first-half touchdowns. A second-half rally fell short as Pittsburgh dropped out of the AFC’s top wild-card spot. The Steelers have dropped three of four, with two of the losses coming in games decided by three points. Pittsburgh’s closing stretch begins with a visit to Indianapolis on Dec. 16.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ beleaguered offense showed signs of progress in its first game since the abrupt firing of coordinator Matt Canada. The Steelers piled up more than 400 yards of offense for the first time in more than three years in a 16-10 win over Cincinnati. While coach Mike Tomlin says he’s not getting ahead of himself, quarterback Kenny Pickett led an offense that showed flashes of explosiveness that were rare during Canada’s two-plus-year tenure. The Steelers are 7-4 before heading into a visit by the struggling Arizona Cardinals.

Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi has fired offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti. The move came a day after the Panthers finished a disappointing season with a loss to Duke. Pitt went 3-9 in 2023. That’s the program’s worst mark since going 2-9 in 1998. The offense was a major issue, with the Panthers shuttling between three quarterbacks in Phil Jurkovec, Christian Veilleux and Nate Yarnell. Pitt finished last in the 14-team ACC in scoring, total offense, rushing, red zone offense and time of possession.
