Beaver County Native Dr. James Frank remembered for his trailblazing career in athletics

Dr. James Frank of Aliquippa passed away on Saturday. He is remembered for his trailblazing career in athletics. In January of 1981, Dr. Frank became the first African-American President of the NCAA. He also was the President of his alma mater, Lincoln University. From 1958 to 1972, he served as basketball coach at Lincoln University. His positions also included Dean of Students at Hunter College, Vice President of Medgar Evers College, and Commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

In his days as a high school athlete, he played on the iconic Aliquippa State Championship Basketball team of 1949. He was co-captain of the team and named All Section, All WPIAL, and second team All State for his performance.

Dr. Frank’s incredible career will be remembered by many. Current NCAA President Mark Emmert issued a heartwarming statement about Dr. Frank earlier this week. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of Dr. James Frank. Throughout his memorable career, Dr. Frank spearheaded positive and impactful change, “championing diversity and inclusion in college sports. He holds a special place in NCAA history, serving as both the first African-American and the first college president to hold the positions of secretary-treasurer and membership president. We join others in mourning his loss while also honoring his legacy.”

In addition to his many other honors, on April 4, 1982, Dr. Frank was inducted into the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame.

AP analysis: The NFL keeps going younger and cheaper

By the time NFL players reach their third and fourth years in the league, the vast majority are struggling just to hang on because of injuries or younger, faster and often cheaper rookies out for their jobs.
In 2006 and 2011, the players union and the NFL tried to do something about that, adopting salary and bookkeeping rules with the potential to extend the careers of these veterans.
It hasn’t worked.
In a first-of-its-kind analysis, The Associated Press found that since 2005, the average amount of playing experience for athletes on the NFL’s opening-day rosters has shrunk from 4.6 years to 4.3.
In 2005, there were 784 players with three years’ experience or less and 714 with five or more years. In 2018, the gap widened to 852 and 644.
And the AP found experience level has dropped at every position, except quarterback, punter and kicker.
