No hat logo for Halladay’s Hall plaque; Mussina uncertain

No hat logo for Halladay’s Hall plaque; Mussina uncertain
NEW YORK (AP) — Roy Halladay won’t have a logo on the cap of his Hall of Fame plaque, and Mike Mussina wants some time before giving his opinion to the Hall, which makes the final decision.
Halladay, who died in November 2017, spent 12 of his 16 seasons pitching for the Toronto Blue Jays and four for the Philadelphia Phillies. Mussina was with the Baltimore Orioles for his first 10 seasons and the New York Yankees for his final eight.
Hall spokesman Jon Shestakofsky said in an email Wednesday the decision had been made for Halladay’s plaque to have no logo.
“The Hall provides guidance to inductees as to which logo, if any, may be depicted on an electee’s plaque cap,” he wrote. “While the Hall of Fame has the final say as to which logo, if any, is included, we work with the electee to reach an appropriate conclusion. This family decision was made in concert with the Hall of Fame.”
Manager Tony La Russa and pitchers Greg Maddux and Catfish Hunter are among other inductees with no logo.
“We decided. We talked about it,” Halladay’s wife, Brandy, said after the news conference, flanked by her sons. “There’s no way to decide between the two teams, and I know we’ve spent the majority of our time in Toronto. Toronto gave us that chance, that base at the start, but Philly also gave us a chance to win and the passion that we wanted, and there’s no way to choose and so we decided that he’ll go in with no team.”
During an August 2016 visit to Toronto, Halladay said he would go into the Hall as a member of the Blue Jays.
“So much anger and vitriol in my mentions about the Halladay family’s decision to have his Hall plaque be logo-free,” Blue Jays broadcaster Mike Wilner tweeted . “Take a deep breath, everyone, and remember that Doc’s widow knew him better than anyone.”
Mussina was annoyed when asked with the final question of the news conference.
“Made it all the way through this whole thing — you gave him one last question,” he told Shestakofsky, who moderated the question-and-answer session.
“I almost split my career down the middle with two organizations,” Mussina said. “Right now I couldn’t sit here and choose one or the other. They’re both instrumental in me sitting here. So, I think that we got a little bit of time here to talk it over with the Hall of Fame and with the people there.”

Larry Fitzgerald returning to Cardinals for 16th season

Larry Fitzgerald returning to Cardinals for 16th season
By BOB BAUM, AP Sports Writer
PHOENIX (AP) — That Hall of Fame slot will have to stay vacant for a while. Larry Fitzgerald isn’t ready to hang up the cleats just yet.
The receiver, whose career statistics rank among the best ever to play the game, has signed a one-year contract to return for a 16th season with the Arizona Cardinals.
“No player has meant more to this franchise or this community than Larry Fitzgerald,” team President Michael Bidwill said Wednesday in the news release announcing the signing.
Fitzgerald explained his decision in an Instagram post.
“A fire burned inside of me my rookie year,” he wrote, “a desire, over all else, to be great. To excel on the field. To impact the lives of others off of it. I’m grateful that the fire still burns just as bright today, and that this organization has let me chase that fire for well over a decade.”
Fitzgerald continued: “Nothing excites me more than continuing to chase greatness with everyone here on and off the field.”
Fitzgerald, who will be 36 before the next season begins, may have been enticed by the hiring of Kliff Kingsbury to replace the fired Steve Wilks. Kingsbury will bring his “air raid” offense from Texas Tech, where he coached for six seasons, and brought in veteran assistant coach Tom Clements to work with quarterback Josh Rosen, who had a rocky rookie season.
In recent years, State Farm Stadium rocked with chants of “Lar-ry! Lar-ry!” after one of his inevitable big plays. Probably no sports figure in Arizona has been as well-loved as No. 11.
Bidwill said in an interview with the team’s flagship radio station, 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station, that he believes Kingsbury’s hiring helped lure Fitzgerald back.
“I think they had a great conversation and he’s excited about focusing on the offense,” Bidwill said. “Obviously, he was very disappointed as all of us were in 2018. He bleeds Cardinal red. He wants to be part of getting this turned around. It’s exciting he was able to make a quick decision and get right to it.”
Arizona went 3-13 last season, the worst record in the NFL and matching the worst for the Cardinals since the franchise moved to the desert from St. Louis 30 years ago. The Cardinals finished last in the league in total offense, passing and rushing.
Consequently, it was a down year for Fitzgerald statistically, too. After three straight 100-catch seasons, Fitzgerald had 69 receptions for 734 yards and six touchdowns. He did, however, throw his first career TD pass, against the Rams in the next-to-last game of the season.
Fitzgerald has been remarkably durable in his career. He’s caught a pass in 227 consecutive games, the second-longest such streak in NFL history.
He passed more milestones last season.
With 16,279 yards receiving, Fitzgerald passed Hall of Famer Terrell Owens for second (behind Jerry Rice) on the NFL career list. With 1,303 career catches, he passed Rice for most receptions for one team in his career. By playing in the season finale at Seattle, Fitzgerald tied kicker Jim Bakken for most games by a Cardinal at 234.
Fitzgerald needs 23 catches to pass Antonio Gates into second (again behind Rice) in career receptions.
Drafted No. 3 overall by the Cardinals out of Pittsburgh in 2004, Fitzgerald has never indicated a desire to play anywhere else, despite the intermittent struggles of the team.
He’s caught passes from 19 quarterbacks during his time in Arizona, with the most memorable years coming when he was paired with Kurt Warner and Carson Palmer.
He’s been at his best in the postseason.
No one has matched his record of 942 yards receiving in his first nine playoff games. He has five 100-yard receiving games in the postseason, an NFL-best three of at least 150 yards.
At the news conference announcing his hiring, the 49-year-old Kingsbury was asked about trying to woo Fitzgerald back for another season.
“What a great role model, what a great leader to have on your team,” Kingsbury said at the time, “and I would be honored to work with him. He’s a guy I’ve admired from afar for a long time.”
Fitzgerald earned $11 million each of the past two years and this deal probably is about the same.
“I don’t want to push Larry, I want him to come to his own decision,” Bidwill said. “When he was ready . we did the deal. Was over at his house signing it on his kitchen table yesterday morning before he left town.”
It’s been a good month for Fitzgerald. Last week, while playing golf with former President Barack Obama, he hit a hole in one.
Now Fitzgerald, who shared the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year award with Eli Manning in 2016, will probably be off soon on one of his trademark trips to some faraway part of the world.
Most importantly for the Cardinals and their fans, he’ll be back when summer workouts begin.

National Sports News:

Rivera unanimous; Halladay, Edgar, Mussina voted to HOF
NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball’s all-time saves leader has become the game’s first unanimous Hall of Fame selection.
Former New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera received all 425 votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced. He had 652 regular-season saves during his 19-year career spent entirely with the Yanks. He was at his best in October, getting 42 saves with a 0.70 ERA over 16 postseasons, including 11 saves in the World Series.
The Hall’s Class of 2019 also includes Roy Halladay, Mike Mussina and Edgar Martinez.
Halladay was an ace with the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies, going 203-105 with a 3.38 ERA. The right-hander received 85.4 percent of the vote and will be the first posthumous inductee since Deacon White in 2013 and Ron Santo in 2012.
Mussina was a steady right-hander for the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles who went 270-153 with 2,813 strikeouts over 18 seasons. He received 76.7 percent, getting seven more votes than the 319 required for election.
Martinez was a .312 hitter with 309 home runs and 1,261 over 18 seasons with Seattle. He got 85.4 percent in his 10th and final try on the writers’ ballot.
The quartet will be enshrined in Cooperstown along with Today’s Game Era Committee selections Harold Baines and Lee Smith on July 21.
Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens made gains but again fell short in their seventh time on the ballot. Bonds got 59.1 percent and Clemens 59.5.

Sources say NFL to consider expanding replay reviews

NEW YORK (AP) — Two people with direct knowledge of the NFL’s plans tell The Associated Press that the league’s competition committee will consider expanding replay reviews to include certain penalties, including pass interference.

Officiating once more became a hot topic during Sunday’s NFC championship game. A missed call by referee Bill Vinovich’s crew of a blatant pass interference penalty and helmet-to-helmet hit by Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman on Saints receiver Tommylee Lewis likely cost New Orleans a spot in the Super Bowl.

Saints coach Sean Payton said NFL senior vice president of officiating Al Riveron told him afterward that a flag should have been thrown.

Search resumes to find soccer player after plane disappears

LONDON (AP) — The search to find missing Argentine soccer player Emiliano Sala and his pilot resumed today with authorities in the Channel Islands looking at whether the pair may have landed safely and been unable to make contact.

The Piper PA-46 plane disappeared from radar Monday night near the island of Guernsey as it was flying from the French city of Nantes to Cardiff, where Sala was due to start playing for the city’s Premier League club.

Authorities said Tuesday they did not expect to find any survivors, but the latest search is focused on possibly finding a life raft.
