Crosby’s OT winner lifts Penguins over Flyers 4-3

Sidney Crosby beat Brian Elliott 55 seconds into overtime to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Penguins blew a two-goal lead but recovered for their NHL-leading 19th home victory when Crosby’s wrist shot slipped by Elliott for his ninth of the season. Evgeni Malkin, Bryan Rust and Kris Letang also scored for Pittsburgh. Tristan Jarry, fresh of his first All-Star appearance, stopped 27 shots for the Penguins. Jakub Voracek, Tyler Pitlick and Scott Laughton scored for Philadelphia. Elliott finished with 16 saves.

Left-handers Derek Holland and Robbie Erlin agreed to minor league contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates along with catcher Andrew Susac and outfielder Charlie Tilson, and all four will report to big league spring training. Pittsburgh also agreed to an $850,000, one-year contract with infielder/outfielder  JT Riddle, who became a free agent when Miami failed to offer a contract by the Dec. 2 deadline. The 33-year-old Holland is 78-78 with a 4.54 ERA in 11 seasons, most with the Texas Rangers. Holland split time between San Francisco and the Chicago Cubs last year, going 2-5 with a 6.08 ERA.

It was a good one tonight as the Central Valley Warriors defeated the Blackhawk Cougars 58-50, giving the Lady Cougars their first lost in the section. The Lady Warriors started out the game with 9-0 run in the first quarter seven of the Lady Warriors first nine points came from Christiane Frye who finished the game with 26pts. The Lady Cougars began mounting a comeback and went into halftime down 28-22. After the half the Lady Warriors began to jump back out to a commanding lead but the Lady Cougars still had fight in them. Cutting the lead but ultimately falling short giving them their first lost in the section.

Versatile race-car driver John Andretti dies at 56

Former race-car driver John Andretti has died at the age of 56 after battling colon cancer. His death was announced by the IndyCar team Andretti Autosport owned by his cousin, Michael. Andretti was a member of one of the world’s most famous racing families. Mario and Michael Andretti have been longtime fan favorites in the IndyCar Series and beyond. Mario Andretti is John’s uncle. John Andretti carved out his own niche by becoming the first driver to attempt running the Indianapolis 500 and Charlotte’s 600-mile NASCAR race on the same day.

Joe Gibbs will be inducted into NASCAR’s Hall of Fame Friday night alongside Bobby Labonte and Tony Stewart. Both drivers won championships driving for Gibbs, who is already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame after winning three Super Bowls as a coach. The induction trio caps a historic year for Gibbs. A year ago, his eldest son died and his team went 1-2-3 in the Daytona 500 a month later. Gibbs drivers won a record 19 races and the the Cup Series championship. Now he celebrates at the Hall of Fame.

Lincoln Park defeats Beaver Falls 1.28.20

 

Lincoln Park traveled to Beaver Falls to take on the Tigers in tonight’s game. Beaver Falls had a rough start with an injury early in the game.  Lincoln Park proved that they came to play by securing a lead in the first and preventing Beaver Falls from taking it away from them throughout the game. The teams went into the half with a score of 46 to 35, in favor of Lincoln Park. Beaver Falls played strong in the second half in an attempt to take the win but they could not overcome Lincoln Park, resulting in a final score of 73 to 53.

Sewickley Academy vs South Side

The South Side Rams defeated the Sewickley Academy Panthers 53-51. It was a game of very little offense but a huge amount of defense. As both teams had a tough time knocking down shots and creating enough space for shooters. The game was knotted up at 18 going into halftime and the game stayed tied for most of the second half. As the game took two overtimes to decide a winner.
