PITTSBURGH (AP) — Steven Brault pitched a two-hitter for his first career complete game, Gregory Polanco hit a three-run homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped an eight-game skid with a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis dropped to third place in the NL Central, 6 1/2 games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs and one back of the Cincinnati Reds. Brault had never pitched more than seven innings in his previous 43 starts. The Cardinals got their only hits in the third when Kolten Wong and Tommy Edman hit back-to-back singles, with Edman driving in St. Louis’ only run.

Steelers place RT Zach Banner on IR, bring back OL Hawkins
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Zach Banner’s season is over. The Steelers placed the right tackle on injured reserve two days after he tore the ACL in his right knee in a win over the New York Giants. Banner edged Chukwuma Okorafor during an extended training camp battle to earn the starting job. His season ended in the fourth quarter against the Giants when his knee appeared to give out while dropping back in pass protection. Okorafor, a third-round pick in the 2018 draft, figures to get the start when the Steelers host Denver in their home opener.

Big Ten changes course, will play fall football after all
By RALPH D. RUSSO AP College Football Writer
Big Ten is going to give fall football a shot after all. Less than five weeks after the conference announced it would push football and other fall sports to spring because of the pandemic, the conference changed course. The Big Ten plans to begin its season the weekend of Oct. 24 with an eight-game schedule for each team. The Big Ten says its Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted unanimously to restart sports. Back in August, the conference voted to postpone fall sports.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger did a very Pittsburgh thing in his return to the lineup, riding the Steelers’ defense and running game to victory. Big Ben did plenty to help the cause, too. Roethlisberger, who missed the final 14 games last season after elbow surgery, threw for three scores in a 26-16 win over the New York Giants at an empty and eerie MetLife Stadium on Monday night. The keys were several defensive plays and the running of backup Bennie Snell, who rushed for 113 yards on 19 carries — his first 100-yard performance in his second NFL season. The Giants were sloppy and couldn’t run the ball in Joe Judge’s first game as coach.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Brad Keselowski passed Austin Dillon for the lead with 48 laps to go and won the second race of NASCAR’s Cup series playoffs at Richmond Raceway. The Team Penski driver won for the fourth time this season in a race that had only three caution periods, each scheduled by NASCAR. Otherwise, it was speed racing on the 0.75-mile oval, and Keselowski was the fastest cars in the field. Keselowski led most of the last 40 laps by 2 seconds or more, outrunning Joey Logano, Dillion and finally Martin Truex Jr.
