CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson will transition from NASCAR to IndyCar with Chip Ganassi Racing in a partnership that could pair two of the most dominant drivers of this generation on one team. The seven-time NASCAR champion will work with the Ganassi organization to finalize sponsorship on a two-year program for Johnson to run the road and street course races on IndyCar’s schedule. If funding is secured, Johnson would be teammates with five-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon. Johnson first tested an Indy car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with Ganassi in July.

Former WWE wrestlers’ lawsuit over brain damage is dismissed
By DAVE COLLINS Associated Press
A federal appeals court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by 50 former pro wrestlers who claimed World Wrestling Entertainment failed to protect them from repeated head injuries that led to long-term brain damage. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City on Wednesday upheld a lower court ruling in 2018 that said the lawsuit’s claims were frivolous or filed too late. Connecticut-based WWE denied allegations that it failed to protect wrestlers from head trauma. Among the plaintiffs were Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and Harry Masayoshi Fujiwara, known as Mr. Fuji. Their lawyer says they were posthumously diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

Error in ninth inning gives Pirates 5-4 win over White Sox
By JOHN PERROTTO Associated Press
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pinch-runner Jason Martin scored the winning run on catcher Yasmani Grandal’s error in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox. With the score tied at 4, the Pirates loaded the bases with none out. Gregory Polanco and Josh Bell singled and, after both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Ke’Bryan Hayes was intentionally walked to load the bases. Kevin Newman then hit a nubber in front of home plate. Pitcher Jimmy Cordero fielded the ball and shoveled it to Grandal in attempt to get a force out at home plate, but Grandal dropped the toss and Martin, who ran for Polanco, scored.

All Puerto Rican players can wear 21 on Clemente Day
NEW YORK (AP) — All Puerto Rican players will be allowed to wear No. 21 on Wednesday during Major League Baseball’s Roberto Clemente Day celebration. The move to wear the number, similar to MLB’s celebration of Jackie Robinson’s No. 42 each April 15, started with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Roberto Clemente Jr., son of the late Hall of Famer, said he received a text from Pirates third base coach Joey Cora on July 29 at the behest of Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton, asking whether all Pirates players could wear the number on Sept. 9.

Pirates get to Bauer, earn doubleheader split with Reds

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates took advantage of an uncharacteristically average performance by Cincinnati’s Trevor Bauer to earn a doubleheader split with a 4-3 win in the nightcap. The Reds took the opener 4-2 behind the strength of Luis Castillo, who picked up his first victory in nearly a year when he worked six solid innings. Cincinnati, however, missed a chance to sweep a doubleheader for the third time this season when the Pirates scrounged up just enough offense against Bauer. The Reds right-hander allowed six hits in six innings with two walks and seven strikeouts. His record fell to 3-3.

Todd Reirden returns to Penguins as assistant coach
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Todd Reirden is back with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins have hired Reirden as an assistant coach under Mike Sullivan, just over a week after Reirden was fired as head coach of the Washington Capitals following a playoff loss to the New York Islanders. This is Reirden’s second stint in Pittsburgh. He served as an assistant under Dan Byslma from 2010-14. Reirden worked four seasons as an assistant under Barry Trotz in Washington, helping guide the Capitals to the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 2018. Reirden was promoted to head coach in the summer of 2018 but was removed after failing to lead the team past the first round of the playoffs.
