Steelers hope unexpected layoff doesn’t mess with rhythm

Steelers hope unexpected layoff doesn’t mess with rhythm
By WILL GRAVES AP Sports Writer
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says he feels as if he’s “starting from scratch” after the team’s unexpected week off. The Steelers were given Week 4 off by the NFL after the league postponed Pittsburgh’s game against Tennessee because of a COVID-19 outbreak on the Titans. Roethlisberger says he believes his team “got the short end” of the decision to call the game. The 38-year-old Roethlisberger says he spent a portion of the weekend playing catch with his son. The Steelers return to action at home this week against cross-state rival Philadelphia.

Commissioners Provide Update On CARES Act Checks

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

The Commissioners announced at Wednesday’s work session that small businesses and non-profit organizations are set to receive $1,841,201.51 of the CARES Act Funding that was awarded to Beaver County earlier this year.

“Pretty much every business who applied that showed a loss in their P&L from March to July, from ’19 to 2020, that even received a PPP loan from the federal government…as long as they still showed loss with the PPP, they should be receiving some kind of award,” said Commissioner Chairman Dan Camp.

The full funding provided to Beaver County from the CARES Act was $14.8 million.

Pens Trade Goalie Matt Murray to Ottawa

Trades start heating up at NHL draft as Penguins deal Murray
By STEPHEN WHYNO AP Hockey Writer
The Pittsburgh Penguins got the action started on the second day of the NHL draft by trading goaltender Matt Murray to the Ottawa Senators. Pittsburgh got a second-round pick, 52nd overall, and forward prospect Jonathan Gruden for their two-time Stanley Cup-winning goalie. Also, Nashville traded former Penguins forward Nick Bonino and two picks to Minnesota for Luke Kunin and a selection later in the draft. The trade action is heating up after just one move was made Tuesday involving established NHL players.

Indians Expect Francona To Be Back For 2021

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians expect manager Terry Francona to return for the 2021 season after he missed 48 games in 2020 due to health reasons.

Team president Chris Antonetti said the 61-year Francona is back home in Arizona resting and recovering. Francona was hospitalized this season after undergoing surgery for a gastrointestinal issue and then dealing with blood clotting complications.

First-base coach Sandy Alomar Jr. filled in for the Indians, who were beaten by the New York Yankees in the wild-card round.

Penguins place veteran D Jack Johnson on waivers

Penguins place veteran D Jack Johnson on waivers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Jack Johnson experiment is over in Pittsburgh. The Penguins have placed the 33-year-old defenseman on waivers so it can buy out the remaining three years of the deal he signed with the club in 2018. Johnson has struggled to keep pace with faster forwards during his tenure in Pittsburgh and the contract became an albatross of sorts for a team that pledged to get faster and younger following a qualifying-round playoff exit to Montreal. The Penguins did extend a qualifying offer to goalie Matt Murray, though he figures to be traded in the near future after the team signed Tristan Jarry to a three-year deal over the weekend.

Beaver Falls takes the Jug from New Brighton 44-15

The Lions and the Tigers met tonight at Reeves field for a battle of the little Brown Jug.  The Lions came out looking strong early on, scoring an early touchdown on their first drive. The Tigers quickly responded and scored a touchdown of their own once they had the ball back. Although, their field goal attempt was blocked, leaving the lead to New Brighton, with an early score of 7-6 NB.  New Brighton then gave Beaver Falls an interception, changing the momentum of the game.  During the rest of the first half, the Tigers continued to score on the Lions, finishing out the first half with a score of 30-7.  After halftime, New Brighton seemed to come out a bit stronger than they looked in the first half, and held the Tigers from scoring for a little while, but the Tigers ultimately took control again and increased their lead.  New Brighton managed one more score in the game, and got a two point conversion to go along with it.  At the end of the game, the score was 44-15, in favor of Beaver Falls meaning the jug got to go back to the Tigers.
