ATLANTA (AP) — The baseball great and one-time home run king Hank Aaron has died. The Atlanta Braves said he died peacefully in his sleep early Friday. No cause was given. Aaron endured racist threats with stoic dignity during his pursuit of Babe Ruth but went on to break the career home run record in the pre-steroids era. “Hammerin’ Hank” set a wide array of records during a 23-year career spent mostly with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, including RBIs, extra-base hits and total bases. But the Hall of Famer will be remembered for one swing above all others, the one that made him baseball’s home-run king., died early Friday. Hank Aaron was 86.

Aliquippa School Board approves Football Coach Mike Warfield’s Contract

(Aliquippa, Pa.) Aliquippa High School Football Coach Mike Warfield was awarded a 3 year contract extending from March 22, 2021 to March 21, 2024  Lorie Willis was hired as a volunteer  girls basketball coach.

The board accepted the resignation of Lakesha Cobb, elementary school administrative assistant effective December 23, 2020.
Friday, February 12 will be an in-service day instead of a  regular school day. Monday, February 15 will be a regular school day, not  an in-service day.
The district has been awarded $4,032,121.00 in CARES ACT funding from the   state.  The funding was allocated to support ongoing learning in school districts in the 16th legislative district.
The funding is part of  $2.2 billion  in federal stimulus funds  to k-12 school districts and charter schools affected by the pandemic

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Vance McDonald is retiring. The 30-year-old announced the decision less than two weeks after his eighth season came to an end when the AFC North champion Steelers were upset by Cleveland in the opening round of the playoffs. McDonald spent four seasons each with San Francisco and Pittsburgh. He caught just 15 passes in 2020 and saw his playing time decrease as the Steelers moved toward a more pass-heavy attack.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Longtime NFL quarterback Philip Rivers has decided to retire after playing one season with the Indianapolis Colts. His decision at age 39 comes less than two weeks after the Colts suffered a 27-24 loss at Buffalo in the wild-card round of the playoffs. Rivers spent his first 16 seasons with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers after they acquired him in a draft-day trade that sent Eli Manning to the New York Giants in 2004. Rivers finishes his career ranked among the league’s top five in career completions, career yards passing and career TDs. His 240 consecutive regular-season starts was the second-longest streak since 1970, trailing only Brett Favre. He never played in a Super Bowl.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Justin Champagnie tied a career-high 31 points on 12-for-15 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Pittsburgh held off Duke for a 79-73 win. It was the fifth 20-plus point, 10-plus rebound effort for the sophomore Champagnie in just his eighth game of the season for the Panthers . Following Matthew Hurt’s layup with 1:23 remaining to bring Duke within 75-73, Au’Diese Toney threw down a dunk off a pass from Johnson with 56 seconds left to seal the win despite the fact the Panthers missed four foul shots in the last 17 seconds. Jalen Johnson scored a career-high 24 points for Duke.

Beaver Falls Defeats Riverside 56-23!!

The Panthers traveled to Tiger territory for tonight’s game.  Beaver Falls started putting points on the board right away with a couple 3-pointers early on.  Riverside ended the first period 10 points behind but Beaver Falls extended their lead to 11 to end the first half, BF 27 – RS 16.  In the second half the Tigers took off and had an explosive third period that took the score to 49-18.  The Panthers tried to keep up but were unable to deliver a win.  The game ended in favor of Beaver Falls with a final score of 56-23.

Pirates’ rebuild picking up steam after Musgrove trade

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates are hopeful the rebuilding process is picking up steam following a three-team trade with the Mets and Padres. Pittsburgh sent starting pitcher Joe Musgrove to the Padres as part of an exchange that brought five players to the Pirates, including four prospects. General manager Ben Cherington says the team’s focus is on stockpiling young talent, adding he believes the club’s minor-league system is deeper than he was when he was hired in the fall of 2019. Cherington added there’s a chance the Pirates could add a veteran or two in free agency before spring training begins
