Steve Higgins Talks About The Impact Of Alvin Gibson & Dwight Collins For BF Basketball

Beaver Falls has had a long tradition of success on the high school hardwood, winning four state championships in boys’ basketball (1970, 1994, 2005, 2013) and a fifth in girls’ basketball (1985). But the tradition can be traced back to the late 1970s, where a pair of men who will be honored this weekend made Tiger Basketball a formidable program.

Those two men were Alvin Gibson from the Class of 1977, and Dwight Collins from the Class of 1979; both of whom will be inducted into the Pittsburgh Basketball Club in 2022. Steve Higgins from the Larry Bruno Foundation joined Matt Drzik to talk about the induction of Gibson and Collins on the February 4 edition of A.M. Beaver County, citing these men as anchors for solidifying the Beaver Falls name in the WPIAL.

Higgins pinpointed a game in the 1977 season where Gibson scored 33 points against Brashear, and the Tigers would continue on to a 26-3 season and a silver medal in the WPIAL (losing the championship to Fox Chapel). Collins, in his senior year of 1979, would lead the Tigers to the Class AAA basketball title. Beaver Falls would be champions again in 1980; their third under legendary coach Frank Chan, whom Gibson and Collins will join in the PBC.

Central Valley wins in a nail biter 47-46 over Blackhawk

Central Valley and Blackhawk met in Monaca for a real good game where it came down to foul shooting and turn overs to decide the winner, with great play on both sides of the gym. It was central valley on a late fast break and lay up that gave them the victory. CV’s Dre Vacich was forced to foul out to put Blackhawk to the line but Blackhawk could not make it from the mark which opened the door for Central Valley to slam it shut. Blackhawk missed 6 free throws and turned it over 13 times. Central Valley had only 5 turn overs and some big rebounding which could have been the difference in the highly contested game.

Aliquippa Football Wins Appeal, Remains In Class 4A For 2022 Season

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

The Aliquippa Quips football team will remain in Class 4A.

The announcement comes following a 21-4 vote by the PIAA to accept the team’s appeal Wednesday night. The Quips were originally set to play up to Class 5A despite an enrollment qualified for Class 1A due to the competitive-balance rule put in place by the state.

The appeal was brought forth after assertions by several personnel, chiefly Aliquippa superintendent Phillip Woods and football head coach Mike Warfield that moving the Quips up another classification would result in a risk to player safety, and an unfair positioning among larger schools. The Quips had previously been moved up to Class 4A for the 2020 season.

Aliquippa will have a chance to defend its Class 4A WPIAL and PIAA crowns next season, but they will receive challenging company as Central Valley will join the Quips in Class 4A following three consecutive WPIAL Championships and back-to-back PIAA titles in Class 3A. In fact, the last school to win a Class 3A WPIAL football title before Central Valley’s current run was–ironically–Aliquippa, who won the 2018 title over Derry en route to their 3rd PIAA state title.
