Today is “Jimbo Covert Day” in Beaver County

(Beaver, Pa.) Today, July 30, 2021, is officially Jimbo Covert Day in Beaver County. Beaver County Commissioners Jack Manning, Daniel C. Camp III and Tony Amadio made a proclamation declaring today as “Jimbo” Covert Day in Beaver County.

Covert, will enter the NFL Hall of Fame as a member of the Centennial Class next Saturday along with Steelers Coach Bill Cowher, Steelers Safety Troy Polamalu, Donnie Shell and Alan Faneca.

Covert was a star football player and wrestler at Freedom High School in the late 1970s, hw starred at the University of Pittsburgh in the early 1980s. Were he was named an All-American twice.

Beaver County native Mike Ditka who was the head coach of the Chicago Bears drafted Covert sixth overall in the1983 NFL Draft.

Covert was a two-time first-team All-Pro who was part of a Bears team that won six division championships, and the 1985 Super Bowl Championship.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona is stepping down for the remainder of this season to address some health issues. The 62-year-old Francona has been wearing a boot on his right foot all season after undergoing toe surgery for a staph infection in February. He’s also dealing with a hip problem, which will require surgery. This is the second year in a row Francona, a two-time World Series champion with the Boston Red Sox, has been sidelined due to his health. He managed just 14 games in 2020 due to a serious gastrointestinal issue that landed him in the Cleveland Clinic for weeks. Bench coach DeMarlo Hale will fill in while Francona is out.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Manny Piña hit two homers and drove in a career-high five runs as the Milwaukee Brewers routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-0. Piña hit his sixth home run of the season off reliever Chris Stratton to cap a big sixth inning for the Brewers, and then added a two-run homer in the eighth inning. The Brewers outscored Pittsburgh 28-3 while sweeping the series and have won five of their last six. Milwaukee has increased its lead over second place Cincinnati in the NL Central to seven games.

WWE star: Ringside Seats, “Many beers” for Return of Stolen Necklace

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — WWE star Sheamus is offering ring-side seats and “many beers” to anyone who returns a prop cross necklace that was stolen from an arena on the campus of the University of South Florida. Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay is also offering a $5,000 reward for information about the theft in May of the necklace, three title belts signed by various WWE stars and a corner pad. Police say the theft happened in the early morning hours of May 22 at the Yuengling Center. Video surveillance shows a man leaving the building. The set for WWE’s “Monday Night Raw,” “Friday Night SmackDown” and pay-per-view events moved in March to the Yuengling Center.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Lorenzo Cain and Luis Urias hit two-run doubles, Adrian Houser pitched five scoreless innings and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 on Wednesday night. Cain’s hit in the fourth inning pushed the Brewers’ lead to 3-0. Urias’ double came during a three-run sixth that made it 6-0. Houser allowed two hits while striking out two and walking one. He is 4-0 in his last 11 starts and the Brewers have won each of his last eight outings. Pirates rookie Rodolfo Castro became the first player in major league history to have his first five hits all be home runs.

Mike Sullivan of the Pittsburgh Penguins has been named U.S. men’s hockey coach for the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. Sullivan will be behind the bench if the NHL participates. There is not a deal currently in place to send NHL players to the Olympics. Negotiations are ongoing. Sullivan coached the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2016 and 2017. USA Hockey expects to name his assistants later this summer.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Omar Narvaez homered and had four RBIs, Brett Anderson pitched six strong innings and the Milwaukee Brewers scored eight runs in the first two innings to roll past the Pittsburgh Pirates for a 9-0 victory on Tuesday night. Narvaez’s home run started a three-run first inning, and his two-run single highlighted a five-run second against Luis Oviedo, who was making his first major league start. Anderson yielded three hits while striking out three and walking one. He has won both starts against the Pirates this season, allowing one unearned run in 13 innings. He is 5-1 against them lifetime.

SEATTLE (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have indeed traded left-hander Tyler Anderson to a playoff contender — he’s going to the Seattle Mariners, not the Philadelphia Phillies. Earlier in the day, reports circulated the Pirates were close to sending the 31-year-old Anderson to the Phils. Instead, he wound up on the other coast, when the Mariners made their second trade of the day that involved pitching. Seattle sent a pair of minor leaguers, catcher Carter Bins and righty Joaquin Tejada, to the Pirates. Anderson is 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA in 18 starts. Hours before that, the Mariners traded Kendall Graveman, one of the best relievers in the majors this season, and pitcher Rafael Montero to AL West-leading Houston for infielder Abraham Toro and reliever Joe Smith.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger took a voluntary pay cut during the offseason. Roethlisberger’s restructured deal helped the Steelers free up enough money to persuade wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to return to the team on a one-year deal. Smith-Schuster decided to stay in Pittsburgh rather than leave in free agency, citing a sense of loyalty.

NEW YORK (AP) — Reliever Clay Holmes was acquired by the New York Yankees from the Pittsburgh Pirates for infielders Diego Castillo and Hoy Park. Holmes is 3-2 in 44 relief appearances with 44 strikeouts and 35 walks in 42 innings. The 28-year-old right-hander has held right-handed batters to a .173 average. Holmes is 5-7 with a 5.57 ERA in four major league seasons. The 25-year-old Park appeared in one major league game on July 16 against Boston. He is batting .307 with 10 doubles, 11 homers and 32 RBIs for Somerset and Triple-A Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
