Neil Walker retires at 35 after 12 major league seasons

Infielder Neil Walker announced his retirement at age 35 after 12 major league seasons. Walker hit .231 with no homers and three RBIs in 18 games with Philadelphia this year. Walker hit a career .267 with 149 homers and 609 RBIs for Pittsburgh, the New York Mets, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Miami and the New York Yankees. Primarily a second baseman but also an occasional first baseman and third baseman, he had 12 homers and a career-best 83 RBIs for the Pirates in 2011, and reached his career high of 23 homers in both 2014 and 2016.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jeff Carter picked up his first goal in Pittsburgh as part of a first-period deluge as the Penguins held on for a 7-6 win over New Jersey. Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh, which nearly let a six-goal lead slip away in the third period. The Devils scored six times in the third but couldn’t quite draw even. New Jersey has dropped seven straight games.

Steelers Sign Coach Mike Tomlin To 3-year Contract Extension
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Tomlin is sticking with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The club announced its longtime coach has signed a contract extension that runs through the 2024 season. Tomlin is 145-78-1 in 14 years with the Steelers with one Super Bowl victory. The deal means Tomlin will likely be part of the process whenever quarterback Ben Roethlisberger opts to retire. The 39-year-old Roethlisberger is returning for the 2021 season but the team has no heir apparent in place.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Sam Reinhart scored twice, and the Buffalo Sabres played spoiler in the East Division playoff race with a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Rookie Arttu Ruotsalainen and Rasmus Asplund, with an empty-netter, also scored for Buffalo. The Sabres bounced back a day after becoming the NHL’s first team eliminated from playoff contention following a 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh. The Penguins had a 4-0-1 run snapped and squandered an opportunity to move to within a point of the East-leading Washington Capitals, who lost at Boston earlier in the day. Jason Zucker and Teddy Blueger scored for Pittsburgh.
Geneva takes the win over Grove City 24-17!
Geneva arrived at Reeves Field ready play tonight against Grove City. The last time the Golden Tornadoes were able to conquer the Wolverines was in 2016. Geneva got points on the board early in the first with a 75 yard drive, which set their momentum for the rest of the game. The Golden Tornadoes were able to tack on another touchdown and a field goal in the second, although the Wolverines responded with their first touchdown in the game, as well as a field goal. The first half ended with a score of Geneva 17 Grove City 10. In the second half, Geneva managed to score early to increase their lead. Grove City put up a fight and made some big plays, although they ultimately only gained one more touchdown. The final score was Geneva 24 Grove City 17. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Manny Machado hit his third home run of the season, Eric Hosmer added two hits and two RBIs and the San Diego Padres jumped on the Pittsburgh Pirates early in an 8-3 win. Machado took Mitch Keller (1-2) deep with a two-run shot down the left-field line during San Diego’s four-run first. Hosmer added a two-run single in the second. San Diego finished a seven-game eastern road trip 5-2. Keller struggled, giving up seven runs in 3 1/3 innings, a step back after pitching well in a victory over the Cubs last weekend.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier scored in the shootout and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1. Giroux and Couturier were the lone shooters for Philadelphia, as Jake Guentzel scored for Pittsburgh, but Carter Hart stopped Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang to seal the win. Jakub Voracek scored his eighth of the season in regulation for the Flyers, who snapped a two-game skid. The Flyers won for just the ninth time in their past 25 games. Hart stopped 31 shots for his first win in eight starts.
