Guentzel Scores Twice, Crosby Once as Pens top Kraken 6-1

SEATTLE (AP) — Sidney Crosby and Danton Heinen scored 25 seconds apart early in the first period, Jake Guentzel extended his point streak to 13 games with two goals and an assist, and the Pittsburgh Penguins routed the Seattle Kraken 6-1. Jeff Carter scored 1:47 into the game, Crosby followed with his fourth goal at 4:42 and Heinen scored on a wrist shot moments later to leave the expansion Kraken stunned at the early onslaught. Guentzel scored his 14th of the season late in the second period and added his 15th midway through the third. He has five goals in the past two games. Jordan Eberle scored for Seattle.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers edged the Baltimore Ravens 20-19 after turning aside a 2-point try by Baltimore in the final seconds. The Ravens pulled within one with 12 seconds to go and opted for a 2-point conversion instead of forcing overtime with an extra point. Lamar Jackson’s flip to tight end Mark Andrews fell incomplete and the Steelers survived. Ben Roethlisberger passed for 236 yards and two second-half touchdowns to Diontae Johnson as the Steelers halted a three-game winless streak. Pittsburgh improved to 6-5-1 with the win. The Ravens fell to 8-4.

Central Valley Heading to Hershey! CV wins 35-21 over Martinsburg.

A big PIAA semifinal game took place Friday night as Martinsburg Central travelled to Beaver County to take on Central Valley.  Martinsburg came out strong forcing Central Valley to fumble the ball on their second play of the game. Central capitalized on the turnover by getting 7 early points.  After a couple more possessions, Central Valley managed to score, tie the game, and then some.  The score at halftime was Central Valley 21 Martinsburg Central 7.  Martinsburg put up a fight in the second half after getting a touchdown off an interception.  Central managed to make it a one score game in the fourth. Both teams battled hard throughout the fourth but Central Valley ultimately came out on top thanks to a 98 yard run to secure their lead. The game ended with a final score of Central Valley 35 Martinsburg Central 21.

Pirates, catcher Roberto Pérez reach 1-year deal

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t waste time finding a replacement for Gold Glove catcher Jacob Stallings. A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press the Pirates have agreed to a 1-year deal worth $5 million with former Cleveland catcher Roberto Pérez. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced. The 32-year-old Pérez won Gold Gloves in 2019 and 2020 with Cleveland but struggled at the plate with just .149 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs in 44 games in 2021. The Guardians declined his $7 million option for 2022.

Pens Lose in A Shootout

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Mikael Backlund scored the deciding goal in the seventh round of a shootout and the Calgary Flames beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 after blowing a late lead. Backlund broke in off the right side and ripped a shot into the top corner against Tristan Jarry. Jacob Markstrom sealed the victory by stopping Brock McGinn on Pittsburgh’s final attempt. The Flames’ Johnny Gaudreau and the Penguins’ Kris Letang scored in the third round of the tiebreaker. Milan Lucic scored in regulation for Calgary, which is 6-1-2 in its last nine games. Markstrom finished with 21 saves. Jake Guentzel scored for Pittsburgh, and Jarry had 31 stops.
