Bob Barrickman Makes His Pick For Who The Steelers Should Take In Round 1 Of The 2022 NFL Draft

“If I had a dollar for every mock draft I’ve seen…unfortunately, I don’t.”

Those words came from Beaver County Radio sports director Bob Barrickman, who joined Matt Drzik on the April 28 edition of A.M. Beaver County to talk about the 2022 NFL Draft. The hometown Pittsburgh Steelers select their first pick tonight at 20th overall, and much speculation has been presented on whether the Steelers will focus on finding a quarterback to compete for the starting job or if outgoing GM Kevin Colbert will shift his priorities elsewhere on the roster.

“I’m not real high on drafting a quarterback,” Barrickman said. “Malik Willis might be the sexier pick; seems like he has a lot of Lamar Jackson in him and has a rifle of an arm.” But Barrickman noted that he feels that Willis’ numbers might be the result of playing at a smaller school like Liberty, while another top quarterback–Pitt’s Kenny Pickett–played well against ACC competition. “Obviously with the tragic death of Dwayne Haskins, there will be a need to draft a quarterback,” he added, “I just don’t think there’s a need to draft one that early.”

Rather than focus on a QB, Barrickman feels that the Steelers should focus on the defensive side of the ball: “I think the player that they would really like to get would the nose tackle from Georgia, Jordan Davis. But I have a feeling that he won’t be on the board.” Barrickman acknowledged that the Steelers might have a shot if they move up, but thinks that he may drop to the Baltimore Ravens at 14th overall: “Jordan Davis would be a Raven-type of player. If he would slip by the Ravens, I could see the Steelers grabbing Jordan Davis in the first round.”

McDavid Outshines Crosby as Oilers Surge Past Penguins 5-1

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Connor McDavid had a goal and three assists to outduel Sidney Crosby, and the surging Edmonton Oilers rolled past the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1. McDavid pushed his season point total to an NHL-best 122 by finishing off his 22nd career four-point game with a pretty shot from a tight angle in the third period. His 44th goal gave the Oilers a three-goal lead. Evander Kane, Evan Bouchard, Zach Hyman and Zack Kassian also scored for Edmonton. Crosby had five shots on goal but didn’t record a point as the Penguins lost their second straight.

Brewers Pound Pirates 12-8

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Willy Adames homered twice and drove in a career-high seven runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-8. Adames hit a two-run blast in the first inning and a three-run drive during a six-run sixth for the NL Central-leading Brewers. It was the first multi-homer game of his career. He added a two-run double in the fifth and finished 4 for 5, raising his batting average 45 points to .239. Reliever Brent Suter got the win for Milwaukee and Josh Hader got the last out for his major league-leading ninth save. Reliever Aaron Fletcher took the loss for Pittsburgh.

Steelers Re-sign Safety Terrell Edmunds to 1-year deal

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing back safety Terrell Edmunds on a one-year deal. The deal will pay Edmunds $2.5 million. Pittsburgh drafted Edmunds in the first round in 2018, but declined to exercise his fifth-year option last spring. He put together a solid 2021, picking off two passes and finishing with 89 tackles in 17 games. The signing actually saved the Steelers more than $4 million based on what the value of Edmunds’ option would have been had they picked it up.

DeSmith has 52 Saves, Guentzel Scores 3, Penguins top Bruins

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Casey DeSmith made a career-high 52 saves and Jake Guentzel scored three goals as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Boston Bruins 4-0. Guentzel completed the hat trick with an empty-netter, his 40th goal of the season. Pittsburgh moved two points ahead of Washington for third place in the Metropolitan Division. The Penguins, Bruins and Capitals have already secured playoff spots but are fighting for seeding in the Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh and Boston are knotted at 99 points apiece. Jason Zucker also scored for the Penguins. Jeremy Swayman made 28 saves for the Bruins, who have lost five of eight.

Vogelbach’s HR Rallies Pirates Past Cubs 4-3

CHICAGO (AP) — Daniel Vogelbach hit a two-run homer, Yoshi Tsutsugo had a two-run double and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied past the Chicago Cubs 4-3. The Pirates rebounded from a three-game sweep at Milwaukee with nine hits in the opener of a four-game series at Chicago. Pittsburgh starter Bryse Wilson allowed Rafael Ortega’s leadoff single in the first, then walked three straight batters. Jonathan Villar added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead, and Seiya Suzuki had an RBI groundout in the second for a 3-0 edge. Vogelbach homered in the third, and Tsutsugo’s double made it 4-3 Pirates in the fifth.

Haskins Apparently Ran Out of Gas Before Being Fatally Hit

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins apparently ran out of gas and was returning to his vehicle when he was fatally struck by a dump truck earlier this month in Florida. The Florida Highway Patrol released Wednesday a recording of a 911 call Haskins’ wife Kalabrya made to the agency shortly after the April 9 accident. Calling from Pittsburgh and unaware of the accident, she told the dispatcher that Haskins had called her to say he had run out of gas and would call her back. When the former Ohio State star didn’t and she couldn’t reach him, she called 911.

Pirates Agree to $13.5M. 2-Year Deal With All-Star Reynolds

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates and All-Star center fielder Bryan Reynolds have avoided arbitration, agreeing to a two-year deal worth $13.5 million. Reynolds and the Pirates were scheduled to go to arbitration after failing to come to an agreement on a one-year deal for 2022. Reynolds asked for $4.9 million, with Pittsburgh countering with $4.25 million. Reynolds hit .302 last season and is batting .227 through five games in 2022.

Gamel 3-run Homer, Hayes’ 4 Hits Lift Pirates Over Cubs 6-2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ben Gamel hit a three-run homer in the first inning, Ke’Bryan Hayes went 4 for 4 a day after getting a big contract and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 for a two-game series split. Kevin Newman hit a two-run triple in the third for the Pirates, who went 3 for 7 with runners in scoring position, a day after going 0 for 10. Seiya Suzuki was 1 for 3 with an RBI single in the fourth. He is 6 for 20 (.400) with three homers and nine RBIs in six games.

Two Funeral Services Scheduled for Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Funeral services for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who was killed when he was hit by a dump truck on Saturday, will take place next weekend. The first memorial will be held April 23 at noon at Christ Church in Rockaway Township. The next day, services will occur at Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland. Haskins, 24, was hit by the truck while he was walking on a South Florida highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
