Riverside and Aliquippa advance to the second round in the WPIAL Playoffs
High School basketball is in full effect. On WBVP this afternoon we had Riverside taking on Burgettstown. The Panthers came away with the victory by a final score of 65-42 over Burgettstown. Riverside advances to the second round of the WPIAL playoffs. On WMBA we had Alaiquippa taking on Charleroi. The Quips came away with the victory by a final score of 70-51. The defending PIAA state champions will being going to the second round to face the winner of Ellwood City/Washington game.

After a sluggish start, the #7 Rochester Rams caught fire at the end of the first half, and kept the momentum throughout as they defeat #10 St. Joseph 81-75 in the First Round match in the 1A WPIAL Boys’ Basketball playoffs on Beaver County Radio.
The Rams trailed by 3 after 1, but took a 44-40 lead at the half and didn’t look back. St Joseph ends their season at 13-10, while Rochester improves to 16-6 and will take on #2 Vincentian in the 1A Quarterfinals.
The Spartans’ Daniel Fabregas and Rochester’s Chad Meny were selected as the CCBC Players Of The Game.

Geneva Drops Six Straight On The Court
The Geneva men lost their sixth straight game Wednesday night on Beaver County Radio, losing to rival Westminster by a score of 72-64. The loss drops the Golden Tornadoes to 9-15 overall and 6-11 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, forcing a potential must-win situation against Waynesburg in Saturday night’s season finale.
Jimmy Leichliter came off the bench to lead Geneva with 19 points, while starting forward Ethan Moose scored 18 in the loss. The Titans were led by Jarret Vrabel with 20, followed by Austin Armwood with 17. Westminster improves to 15-9 overall (11-6 in the PAC).
Malkin Sharp In Return To Ice For Pittsburgh
Evgeni Malkin returned to the lineup, scoring an assist and a goal, and Matt Murray stopped all 29 shots as the Pittsburgh Penguins shut out the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 on Tuesday night. Sidney Crosby earned his 999th point when he assisted on Jake Guentzel’s 3rd-period goal, and Phil Kessel and Matt Cullen both tallied goals. The win puts Pittsburgh in 2nd place in the Metropolitan, and their next game is Thursday night at home against Winnipeg (7:30 pregame, 8:00 puck drop).

Kang Out For Start Of Spring Training

The Pittsburgh Pirates are beginning spring training without third baseman Jung Ho Kang. He is scheduled to go on trial in South Korea on charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident. Kang is in the third year of a four-year contract he signed with Pittsburgh in January 2015.

Penguins Look To Break Second-Place Tie
The Penguins are now in a three-way tie for second place in the Metropolitan Division with the Rangers and Blue Jackets, and look to break ahead of that tie tonight at home against Vancouver. Evgeni Malkin is a game-time decision, and Bryan Rust is out with a lower-body injury. Game time is at 7:00 PM.
